Since then, Walker has been virtually ever-present for City but his latest injury concern could see Guardiola revert back to last season's Champions League plan in order to try and beat Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday. A year ago, it was Manu Akanji who was playing so well that Walker had to watch from the bench. Capable of playing across the back line, Akanji offers Guardiola something different when he plays at full-back, especially when John Stones is in the XI. With Stones capable of inverting into midfield, Akanji can seamlessly switch into a back three as well as hold his own as a full-back. He has also shown his qualities doing the Stones-role pushing into midfield. In the Champions League final, it was Akanji pushing into space, freeing Bernardo with Rodri scoring from the deflected cutback. "I never expect anything here. I don't know if I'm going to play or not, in the end I try to give my best when I'm on the pitch," Akanji said recently after starting ahead of Ruben Dias at
Liverpool . "I was happy I could start. You have to ask the manager why he picks me but I give everything in training and in games." That attitude has seen him start six of the last seven games, and he would be first in line to replace Walker if the captain is not able to face Arsenal. He started against the Gunners the last time they visited the Etihad, albeit at left-back, and his versatility will be invaluable if the news on Walker is not positive. If City can cope without Walker for the biggest game in their history, they can cope without him vs Arsenal.
