Pat Kelly, 64, longs for the neurosurgeon to be jailed for what he has done. And he has called on the Scottish Government to speed up a public inquiry into the surgeon – who left an estimated 172 patients damaged through botched operations. Pat, from Dundee, was left in constant pain and in poor health after an operation by Eljamel. And now he fears he will not survive to see the conclusion of a public inquiry into the scandal. Former radio DJ Pat said: "I would love to see him jailed before I die. I would love to see this clown behind bars because it is horrific what he has done to so many people over the years. "If the
British government managed to get an extradition treaty then there might be a chance. But then there is the will of the Scottish Government as well and I am not convinced on that score." cancer diagnosis after Scots academic sister's research Pat has been told the botched operation by Eljamel could take years off his life. He said: "I don’t know how long I have got. Every day my condition is worse, my health is deteriorating." Pat had problems dating back to 1992 when he suddenly was unable to feel his legs. In pain and suffering violent leg shakes, in 2005, he was finally diagnosed with thoracic disc herniation – a serious and rare spinal condition. Eljamel agreed to operate to shave or remove discs from his spine but the operation was a disaster. Pat said: "The operation involves going in by the side, then they have got to collapse your lung and remove ribs to get right through past the heart. "You are basically wide open. It is a brutal operation. It needs a very skilled neuro-surgeon to do that. I thought at the time I was blessed to have him." Four days after surgery, on February 2, 2007, he collapsed and slipped from his chair. When he came to, there was "chaos". Pat said: "My lung had collapsed and that is what had caused me to fall off the chair and faint. Join the Daily Record

"I’d had a haemorrhage and they said if the blood went into my lung I could die. They told me to say goodbye to my wife and son." He said there has been “all sorts of shenanigans” with his medical notes and he fears a public inquiry may never get to the truth. Pat said from 2007 his condition worsened. He added: "I knew operations weren’t always guaranteed but as years progressed and nothing improved, I just thought I had been unlucky. "I'm still in a great deal of pain. If I get up to the bathroom at night, I can hardly walk. My mobility is getting worse and worse and I get very breathless. I should be in a wheelchair and that will happen eventually. "Doctors have advised me that there could be more and more problems. But if my discs had been shaved or removed that would have prevented the condition from worsening. "They cannot operate again because of the scar tissue around that area, so there is nothing anyone can do for me now." In 2014, Pat read an article which said Eljamel had been suspended after a series of botched operations. I thought, 'I am not bloody having that'." He demanded his case was reviewed and an MRI scan showed his discs were in exactly the same position as they had been before the operation – proving his operation had been a sham. He has been fighting for answers ever since. Pat first went to Shona Robison, the then health secretary as well as an SNP MSP for the area. But he said: "She fobbed it off. "By then, there was a damning Royal College of Surgeons report and, had she read that, she would have known this needed to be investigated because what he was up to was horrendous. "Had she acted back then, it would be over. I think she should resign over it because this man caused serious injuries and to so many people while she is now Deputy First minister. It is a damned disgrace." And he said the compensation package mooted by First Minister Humza Yousaf has yet to happen. There are 172 known victims but it is feared there may be many more and they are waiting to learn the terms of reference for the inquiry. Pat added: "This is our last chance to put it right." A Scottish Government spokesman said: "In August 2023, the due diligence review published by NHS Tayside laid bare some of the failings in the board’s response to concerns over Mr Eljamel. "The review also included significant information not previously known to the Scottish Government which made clear concerns were not acted upon with the urgency or rigour they deserved. "The establishment of the public inquiry is progressing at pace, with the newly appointed chair, Lord Weir, leading on the necessary arrangements." Don't miss the latest news from around
