Following a wave of leaks about the PS5 Pro, more reports have emerged about Sony’s new in-house upscaling technology for the console. Sony might be forced to officially confirm the existence of the PS5 Pro soon, as more leaks have emerged about the console’s capabilities. Last week, a leak seemingly outed various specifications about the console – including significant boosts in ray-tracing speed, a GPU capable of 33.5 teraflops, and the inclusion of Sony’s new upscaling technology. This was followed by another leak a few days later , which claimed it would include a 28% increase in system memory over the original PlayStation 5 and an identical CPU with a ‘high CPU frequency mode’, among other details. Both these leaks have since been corroborated by IGN, so it’s looking increasingly likely these specifications are the real deal, and have leaked from developers working with the console. Now, more details have emerged about Sony’s new in-house upscaling technology, believed to be called PSSR (PlayStation spectral super resolution). Upscaling tech like Nvidia’s DLSS (deep learning super sampling) is used to make an image appear higher resolution than the original source, which is useful for less powerful hardware or for otherwise exceeding a hardware’s native abilities. According to a new report from Insider Gaming , PlayStation has ambitions for PSSR to achieve 4K at 120fps and 8K at 60fps in future consoles. Due to hardware limitations, however, Sony is apparently aiming for 4K at 60fps and 8K at 30fps with the PS5 Pro. The report cites an unnamed example of an upscaled first party game on the PS5 Pro. On the original PlayStation 5 console, the title runs at 1080p at 60fps in performance mode and 1800p at 30fps in fidelity mode. However, on the PS5 Pro, using PSSR, it is targeting 1440p at 60fps. Essentially, it’s approaching the visual quality of fidelity mode while maintaining the same frame rate as performance mode. Another example claims the PS5 Pro is aiming to add ray-tracing while achieving 60fps. The original PlayStation 5 can only hit the same performance without ray-tracing. Back in 2020, Sony stated a future system software update would arrive to allow output resolutions up to 8K, but this hasn’t materialised yet. ‘PS5 is compatible with 8K displays at launch, and after a future system software update will be able to output resolutions up to 8K when content is available, with supported software,’ an FAQ post read. The PS5 Pro is believed to be launching later this year. Sony has traditionally always held a State Of Play presentation in May or June, so if there’s not an annoucement now, to counter the leaks, that’s when it’s most likely to be unveiled.
