Manchester City renew their bid for the
Premier League title this afternoon when they travel to Merseyside. City are one point ahead of
Arsenal in the title race, with a game in hand. But with the Gunners playing against Brighton straight after the end of City's match at Everton, the pressure will be on
Pep Guardiola and his side to maintain the gap before their rivals kick-off. They face a Toffees side scrapping for their Premier League survival, currently sitting just a point above the drop zone. But Sean Dyche's side come into battle in a more confident mood off the back of an extraordinary 5-1 win at Brighton. Guardiola, of course, is trying to manage his squad amidst a bid to complete a league, FA Cup and
Champions League treble, and has a crucial second leg vs
Real Madrid approaching fast. But he has only one injury concern with Nathan Ake - the defender has missed the last two games and the manager was unsure at his Friday press conference whether he'd be available today. Sweden were celebrating in
Liverpool on Saturday and here it was Norway's turn as one of their finest exports moved
Manchester City closer to winning the Premier League. Erling Haaland netted his 52nd goal of the season to end his worrying goal drought of, erm, two games to complete a brilliant few minutes for the champions towards the end of a first half where they had otherwise struggled for quality. Haaland's goal was set up by man-of-the-match for a second week Ilkay Gundogan, who produced one of the best skills of the season to score an audacious opener and once again make it seem silly that the club do not want to give him a new contract that runs past 2024. It finishes 3-0 to City, and another week where a much-changed side records three points thanks to the brilliance of Ilkay Gundogan. A fantastic opener, an assist for Erling Haaland, and a lovely free kick after the break put City within touching distance of the Premier League title, thanks to an 11th straight Premier League win. Share Comments 90' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Gomez is on Another rare sighting here as Sergio Gomez replaces Ruben Dias for the four minutes of injury time. Share Comments 87' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Rodri replaced Another three minutes for Kalvin Phillips to add to his collection. Share Comments 85' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Phillips to come on Rodri has looked tired from early on, and when he overhits a pass and looks to the bench, Kalvin Phillips gets ready to come on. Share Comments 78' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Double City change City held off making the Bernardo change until they knew Rodri was okay to continue after coming off worse in a 50/50, but he stays on. Ilkay Gundogan is denied a hat-trick for a second week as he's replaced, along with Erling Haaland. Bernardo and Jack Greaish are on. Share Comments 75' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Haaland clattered Jordan Pickford wins the ball and also takes out Erling Haaland, but no foul given. In fairness, he lets another 'foul' go at the other end. Everton replace James Garner with Demarai Gray. Share Comments 72' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Still no substitutions This game is far more comfortable than the first half, and it shows by which substitutes are warming up. Before Gundogan's free-kick, it was Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish getting stretched and warm. After, it's Cole Palmer, Kalvin Phillips, Sergio Gomez and Rico Lewis. Guardiola still hasn't turned to his bench, seemingly keen to ensure Everton aren't allowed to get a consolation of any kind, but surely it's time to look at resting Haaland's legs, or someone like Rodri or Gundogan. Right on cue, Bernardo is getting readied. Share Comments 66' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Off the bar Everton aren't totally giving up and are trying to get back into the game. They just don't have much imagination when they do get into good positions and are
shooting from distance. Dwight McNeil sees an effort deflected for a corner, which is just about dealt with by Ederson, albeit unconvincingly. From the next corner, James Tarkowski's header hits the top of the bar as a reminder that City must be clever here. Share Comments 60' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Haaland goes for goal City break and when Phil Foden crosses to the back post for Erling Haaland, he goes for the spectacular bicycle kick. He makes contact, but it's well wide and Everton can come out with the ball. Share Comments 55' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Double Everton change Idrissa Gueye and Mason Holgate come off. Amadou Onana and Conor Coady are on. Some boos for that Holgate decision. Share Comments 54' - Everton 0-3 City Joe Bray Wide! Another free kick, this time on the other side, is taken by Mahrez. It takes a deflection off the wall, and it's looked out for a corner to stop a yellow shirt getting a shooting chance. Share Comments 50' - Everton 0-3 City KEY EVENT GUNDOGAN AGAIN! From the free kick, Ilkay Gundogan steps up and curls past Jordan Pickford. That should be game over. Share Comments 48' - Everton 0-2 City Joe Bray Foden wins a free kick Phil Foden drives forward and races towards the area. Former Man United midfielder James Garner brings him down just outside the box and earns a yellow card. Foden needs a bit of treatment after that - he was travelling at some speed. Share Comments 45' - Everton 0-2 City Joe Bray Back underway No changes from City. Everton bring on Neal Maupay for Dominic Calvert-Lewin. And then admire Erling Haaland's only contribution to the half - another important goal. Share Comments HT - Everton 0-2 City Simon Bajkowski Half time ratings It's half time, and here are our ratings at the break: Ederson 7 Walker 8 Dias 7 Laporte 5 Akanji 6 Rodri 7 Gundogan 9 Alvarez 5 Mahrez 7 Foden 7 Haaland 7 Share Comments 45' - Everton 0-2 City Joe Bray Two minutes added City almost have a third as Gundogan's close range shot from a Mahrez cross is blocked brilliantly. Share Comments 43' - Everton 0-2 City Joe Bray Guardiola's reaction to Haaland goal Guardiola immediately called over Laporte and Akanji for some detailed instructions after Haaland's goal. City went from being under pressure and mightily lucky not to be behind, to 2-0 up within five minutes. That's the kind of mentality of champions-elect, and yet Guardiola is still looking for improvement. Share Comments 41' - Everton 0-2 City Simon Bajkowski About that contract... Ilkay Gundogan got City over the line last year and this is another starring role. A goal and an assist in a half where little else was on offer has given City complete control of this game. City may have to think again about that contract Share Comments 38' - Everton 0-2 City KEY EVENT Haaland scores! Two in two minutes!Gundogan turns provider as he gets to the byline, stands it up for Erling Haaland, and he heads in goal umber 36 of the league season. City have gone from under pressure to complete control. Share Comments 36' - Everton 0-1 City KEY EVENT Gundogan scores! Moments after Everton should have scored, Ilkay Gundogan flicks a brilliant effort past Pickford to put City ahead. Mahrez curls in a cross, Gundogan has his back to goal, uses his thigh to control, and then flicks the ball back behind him and into the bottom corner. Share Comments 35' - Everton 0-0 City Joe Bray Pickford saves Rodri records City's first shot on target with a long-range effort that doesn't cause Jordan Pickford too much trouble. Share Comments 34' - Everton 0-0 City Joe Bray Walker saves the day The noise is rising inside Goodison. Everton break again and Kyle Walker sprints to the rescue to stop Calvert-Lewin from pulling the trigger. Julian Alvarez just had a chance to run at goal, but Dwight McNeil got back very well to stop him. Then the biggest let-off of the lot as Mason Holgate is unmarked at the back post but somehow finds row-Z from about four yards. City should be behind after that Share Comments 32' - Everton 0-0 City Joe Bray Foden effort blocked From another corner, City have a man unmarked on the edge of the box. This time it's Phil Foden, who shoots from distance but the ball is blocked well before Jordan Pickford has to deal with it. Then Everton break and Riyad Mahrez does his best Fernandinho impression to bring down Calvert-Lewin while pretending he wasn't trying to bring him down. Share Comments 27' - Everton 0-0 City Joe Bray Manager reactions tell the story Looking at the touchlines, you can see who is the happier manager. Sean Dyche is urging his side on, applauding every press, tackle and effort to counter-attack. Pep Guardiola is up and down from his seat, clearly unhappy with how often City are giving the ball away. He's called Manu Akanji over a few times for some tactical instructions, and he's clearly anxious about something. City work another short corner, but Riyad Mahrez this time fires over from the edge of the box. Share Comments 24' - Everton 0-0 City Simon Bajkowski Alvarez found again from a corner Twice now City have found Alvarez short from a corner on the edge of the box. He’s yet to make the right decision but Everton would be wise not to give him too many more opportunities to correct that. Share Comments 21' - Everton 0-0 City Simon Bajkowski Cagey opening 20 minutes in and neither team has had a shot, never mind one on target. You would expect both teams wouldn’t be too disappointed by that, even if neutral would want more goalmouth action. Share Comments
