Tot who died after she got head stuck in bars on mums bed saves three lives
A little girl who died in a tragic accident has saved the lives of three people through organ donation. Toddler Jessica Farrer was just 17 months old when she lost her life after she got her head stuck between the bars on her mum's bed. But her rare AB positive blood type meant her organs could be donated to save some of the sickest people on the transplant list. A man in his 30s who had spent a year on dialysis was given her kidneys. Her liver was donated to a poorly baby and her heart was transplanted into a little boy, probably of a similar age to Jessica. She had been enjoying a Sunday morning watching TV on her mum Clair's bed with her and brother Daniel, eight. Daniel was at the foot of the bed on his tablet, while mum sat propped up on pillows at the head, with Jessica watching her favourite Miss Rachel programme on the TV just inches away from her brother, reports the Mirror . Moments later Clair looked over and couldn't see the baby, she wasn't snuggled by her feet, or cosying up to her big brother as she had done hundreds of times before. Clair, 41, jumped off the bed and found little Jessica at the foot, her head caught in the metal frame and with her feet unable to reach the floor. The frantic mum released the youngster, who was floppy, and quickly raced with her downstairs, shouting at Daniel to find her phone to call 999. "I opened the front door and screamed for help, I was very aware it was only me and the children in the house," Clair told the Mirror. "I started CPR, I had saved two people in the past including my mum with CPR when I was younger, so I just tried to stay calm and started compressions." The ambulance crew arrived and an air ambulance landed close to the family home in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire . Little Jessica was rushed to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, before she was transferred to Addenbrookes in Cambridge . Her brain had been starved of oxygen and Clair and dad Louis Farrer had been told her blood was highly acidic as they waited at the bedside of the tot, who never regained consciousness. He said if she comes through this she would be a significantly different child to the girl we knew." Jessica was declared dead on March 8, but went on to change three other people's lives forever. Clair and Louis said their goodbyes, and went with little Jessica, who was wrapped in a superhero cape with messages from her family, to the theatre door, ready for her last operation. Her brain was catastrophically injured but her body was perfect, so she could save others." The family received a letter from the NHS' Donor Family Care Service detailing who young Jessica was able to help with her selfless act by giving them the gift of life. Clair added: "The toddler who got her heart, he would have spent so much time in hospital and his parents must have thought he was going to die. To get an AB positive heart, the right size, it's so rare, it is a miracle. And that heart will grow with him and he will have a full life thanks to Jessica." Her parents said their goodbyes (Image: Clair Robertson) Louis and Clair want to raise awareness to other parents who own similar metal style beds. Although there is legislation about the gap allowed in children's cots, there appears to be no similar move for adult beds and they fear another family could find themselves in the same position. Clair added: "We all know about cutting grapes in half, not leaving a baby in the bath and the danger of a child getting caught in a blind cord but no-one knows about adult metal beds and the risks." Jessica's funeral is set to take place on Thursday, April 6, and Friends of the family have set up a Go Fund Me page to help the family pay for related costs.
