Marcus Rashford returned to
Manchester United training on Monday after withdrawing from the
England squad for their games against
Italy and
Ukraine. United's top scorer picked up a knock in Erik ten Hag's side's final match before the international break and had to go off in the 83rd minute of the 3-1 FA Cup win over Fulham. Rashford had initially been named in the England squad for the first round of Euro 2024 qualifiers but had to pull out due to the injury. With players filtering back to Carrington this week following their international commitments, Rashford also returned on Monday after a holiday to begin his rehabilitation. There was no ball work involved in his session which instead purely focused on fitness. United will be hopeful he is available for Sunday's trip to Newcastle, as they are already without Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Donny van de Beek, while Marcel Sabitzer and Raphael Varane are both doubts and Anthony Martial's return date remains unclear. Rashford came in for criticism from some corners for travelling to
New York last week while he wasn't involved in the England squad but Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate insisted it wasn't an issue. "Once Marcus is ruled out of the squad, it’s entirely up to him how he spends his time," he said. "The players don’t get a lot of breaks and I’m sure some of them will be flying off after tomorrow’s game if they get 48 hours off with the schedule as it is. "We are always linking with clubs on scans and assessments. There is also how every individual player feels, so there is a lot involved. I am always working with the players on what the best solution is for them. Of course, we always want the players and we always want to work with them as often as we can. "In every squad we have, we always lose a couple. My focus then has to be on the group that are here, and how do we win the games?"
