Boris Johnson suspends all travel corridors indefinitely
The Government has suspended all of the UK’s travel corridors over concerns about new Covid variants.
The decision was announced at the daily briefing on Friday evening, just 24 hours after a ban was imposed on travellers from South America and Portugal.
It means all overseas arrivals must now self-isolate for up to 10 days.
While holidays are currently banned under lockdown rules, the move will affect those already abroad, business travellers, as well as expats planning to return to the UK. It also casts serious doubts about the prospects of post-lockdown spring holidays.

Rio de Janeiro beaches crowded as Brazil tackles new variant
Beaches in Rio de Janeiro were still crowded on the day the UK banned all arrivals from South America over concerns over a new strain of coronavirus.
Brazilian health authorities have warned the country will struggle to cope with the pressure on hospitals, as a rapid case of hospitalisations was reported across Brazil's Amazon states since the middle of December.
A new strain could be behind the increased pressure, as it has already proven to re-infect those who have already recovered from the disease

Student defends lockdown-breaking snowball fight in Leeds
A university student has defended a snowball fight in Leeds which saw hundreds of young people break England's lockdown rules, saying it was "a laugh people needed".
The wintry gathering in Hyde Park on Thursday afternoon was organised on Facebook, but was widely criticised on social media amid concerns over coronavirus infections.
Footage shows many of those involved not appearing to social distance and the crowd was later dispersed by police.
Adam, a 20-year-old student who did not wish to give his second name, said students from various universities were involved and non-students also took part.

Healthcare workers save thousands of vaccines after power cut
Two thousand Covid vaccines were put at risk by a power cut at Wilmslow Health Centre, before staff successfully hatched a last-minute plan.
Dr Fari Ahmad, a GP at the centre, described how offers of help from the community streamed in to save the jabs after an explosion at an electrical substation had caused the outage.
She told us that the power cut was one of a number of challenges facing the centre as it assists in the vaccine roll-out.

'No one is above the law': Nancy Pelosi signs second Donald Trump impeachment
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said "no one is above the law" as she signed the Article of Impeachment against Donald Trump.
In making a case for the "high crimes and misdemeanours" demanded in the Constitution, the four-page impeachment resolution relied on Mr Trump's own incendiary rhetoric and the falsehoods he spread about Joe Biden's election victory.
Mr Trump is the only US president to be impeached twice.

US Capitol riots: How I came face to face with rioter after he attacked police officer | Exclusive
Warning: Some viewers may find the content distressing.
Newly released footage from The Telegraph shows the Trump supporter who was filmed allegedly beating officer during storming of Congress
Subscribe to The Telegraph on YouTube ► https://bit.ly/3idrdLH
It was January 6. A violent mob had just stormed the US Capitol building. As I spoke to rioters outside, I could tell that one of the men near me - a striking, shaggy-haired man - had been in the centre of the unrest that had played out in the halls of Congress.
He was visibly suffering from the effects of the tear gas that law enforcement officers had just released to disperse the crowd. As I approached him, he described what it had been like to "breach" the seat of US government.
His next comments were so shocking I assumed they were a consequence of the tense atmosphere we found ourselves in. But cross-referencing my footage of this man, I discovered that our encounter had come just minutes after he had allegedly assaulted a police officer.
This newly released footage from The Telegraph of the unidentified suspect may give an insight into his mindset at the time. It may also provide a key piece of evidence that leads to his identification.
Watch the video to see the shocking sequence of events.

Trump impeached: Inside the chamber as the historic vote was passed | Ben Riley-Smith analysis
There was no spasm of celebration or wave of applause at the moment Donald Trump made history by becoming the first US president ever to be impeached twice, says Ben Riley-Smith.
Instead there was near silence in the US House of Representatives after Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House speaker who green-lit the lightning quick impeachment drive, uttered the critical words.
“On this vote, the ayes are 232, the nays are 197. The resolution is adopted,” she said from the Speaker’s chair, swiftly followed by a thwack of the gavel.

Sir Graham Brady, Chairman of the 1922 Committee dons his Planet Normal spacesuit, alongside co-pilots, Allison Pearson and Liam Halligan. The MP for Altrincham & Sale West makes a strong case for easing the lockdown once the most vulnerable are vaccinated, and wonders just how happy the Prime Minister can be imposing restrictions in the first place.
Also on the podcast, Allison ensures the podcast is “substantial” with the addition of a scotch egg, Liam analyses whether excess deaths may have been driven by the policy response to Covid and not by the virus itself, and one of our presenters gets all riled up about their big toe (yes, really!)

Donald Trump impeached for a second time in historic vote
President Donald Trump has been impeached by the US House of Representatives over the violent siege of the Capitol by a vote of 232 to 197.
He is the only president in US history to be twice impeached.
Trump faced a single charge “incitement of insurrection” in Wednesday's vote after he encouraged a mob of loyalists to, as he put it, “fight like hell” against election results.
The subsequent attack on the U.S. Capitol turned deadly and delayed finalising Democrat Joe Biden's election victory.
Ten Republicans supported impeachment along with the Democrats.
