Blackface in the Netherlands: why is the Zwarte Piet tradition still a thing?
Zwarte Piet or Black Pete has been a festive tradition in the Netherlands for generations – which sees thousands of people, who are often white, dress up as the character wearing afro-style wigs, red lipstick and full blackface makeup. There have been attempts to make the holiday character less controversial but the tradition is still widely practiced. We went to the festivities this year to find out if time is nearly up for the tradition

Middle Earth: the fight to save the Amazon's soul
In the heart of the Amazon rainforest, an alternative climate conference is taking place that brings together youth activists, indigenous leaders, scientists and forest dwellers. In a region known as Middle Earth, they are building a new alliance and demonstrating that the rainforest is central to life on Earth, even though Brazil backed out of hosting this year's official UN climate talks after the election of Jair Bolsonaro as president

What is the Green New Deal?
The climate crisis is the biggest global threat that humanity faces. But despite action being demanded for years, many governments have continued to sustain an economy that’s bad for the environment. The green new deal proposes a different way forward and has been mentioned by the Labour party, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Bernie Sanders in the US, and school strikers around the world. But what does it mean? Maya Goodfellow explores what the green new deal is and how would it work.

Open Water: Greenlanders on the climate crisis
A glimpse into the lives of three Greenlanders: a hunter, a ship’s captain and a fisherman, individuals whose very existence and heritage is intertwined with the Arctic Ocean. Like many who live in the polar north, their fortunes straddle the extremes of summer and winter. Faced with a drastically changing environment, these seafarers reflect on their past, their present and uncertain future with a complex mix of emotions

It is 45 years since Turkey and Greece came to blows in Cyprus, and the island remains physically and politically divided - not least by a wall that cuts through the capital, Nicosia. Hello, I have death anxiety | Death Land #3
A lot of people are scared of death. But some people, including Leah, think about it an unhealthy amount. Thanatophobia is an irrational fear of death or the dying process. When we asked for your views, a lot of you said suffer from this too. So this week's episode of Death Land is dedicated to an open conversation about the issue

The food deserts of Memphis: inside America's hunger capital | Divided Cities
In the 'food deserts' of Memphis, Tennessee, dominated by fast food outlets and convenience stores, locals lack what seems a basic human right in the richer half of the city: a supermarket. With a big gap in life expectancy, are these Americans doomed to die younger than their neighbours – or can they fight for their right to nutrition?

As their national election trek goes on, John Harris and John Domokos hit the Surrey town of Guildford, recently won by the Conservatives with a big majority, but shaken up by Brexit, a new cosmopolitan culture, and people's rising unease about poverty and homelessness. Chlorinated chicken hardly sounds like something you'd enjoy to read on a menu. The European Union bans imports of chlorine-washed chicken from the US but a post-Brexit transatlantic trade deal could allow exports to the UK. So what's the truth about chlorinated chicken and is it safe to eat?

Why do Havana's taxi drivers earn more than doctors? | Divided Cities
Cuba's strange dual system means that public sector workers and those in private enterprise are paid in different currencies. Laura, a GP, earns Cuban pesos, whereas Rogelio, who was a doctor, now makes more in an hour as a taxi driver than he used to in a month because he is paid in 'convertible pesos', which are worth 24 times more. As doctors and teachers struggle to buy basic goods, is it time for change?

Divided Cities: stories of five cities split by major global divisions - series trailer
The fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago seemed to herald a more united future. Since then our world has fractured anew and our cities feel more divided than ever, from politics to climate to food. Divided Cities reveals five surprising stories of how major global divisions are playing out in cities around the world: Havana’s strange system of two currencies, the private sector one worth 24 times the state one; populist demands for Melilla, a Spanish outpost in Africa, to refuse asylum seekers by building a huge Trumpian wall; the “food deserts” of Memphis, Tennessee that lack what seems a basic right in richer neighbourhoods – a supermarket; Nicosia, Europe’s last divided capital, where young Cypriots are pushing back against conscription; and Delhi, a city riven by "climate apartheid" into those who can protect themselves from the elements and those who must live, suffer and sometimes die in the pollution and deadly heat. Divided Cities looks beyond Trump and Brexit to the deeper global divisions of a world ever more split into “us” and “them”

‘Make Spain great again’: does Melilla really need a Trump-style wall? | Divided Cities
Everyone in Melilla has some connection to the city’s most visible and controversial feature: a huge barbed-wire fence, which separates this Spanish port city from the rest of north Africa. Asylum seekers like Aboubacar wait for months in hidden forest camps to scale the fence, populist politicians like Jesús want to strengthen it, and both the Moroccan and Melillan economy depend on the 30,000 Moroccans like Youssra who cross through it every day to work. Will Melilla embrace its fate as a city embedded in Africa – or will it succumb to populist Trump-style demands to build a wall?

A film about a young farmer’s connection to the land, his animals and a changing world in the north of England. Battling against unsustainable farming methods and an unenthusiastic market, Adam Crowe continues to work on two neighbouring farms while fighting to launch his own business and breed a flock of sheep. This video has gone viral causing widespread speculation that Princess Anne snubbed the US president and first lady.
The footage from a Buckingham Palace reception shows the Queen seemingly gesturing to her daughter to greet Donald Trump. But it's since emerged that she turned her head to see which world leader was next in line to meet Trump and spotted Anne in the distance.
The princess, raising her hands in the air, laughed and said "It's just me", before adding "and this lot", pointing to members of the household behind her.
Anne is considered to be the most down-to-earth member of the Windsor family. Neither of her husbands accepted peerages and her children don't have official titles. She also works more than any of the other royals and is involved with more than 200 charities and organisations.

From now on, the New Zealand government will be applying a climate crisis 'lens' to all its major decisions.
Climate change minister, James Shaw, said cabinet “routinely” considers the effects of its decisions on human rights, the Treaty of Waitangi, rural communities, the disability community, and gender.
Now climate change will become a standard part of cabinet’s decision-making too, in a week in which the country has being battered by extreme weather events in both the North and South islands.
He said a ‘climate impacts assessment’ will be mandatory for proposals that are designed to reduce emissions, or which are likely to have an impact on greenhouse emissions greater than 250,000 tonnes a year. .

A furious Donald Trump cut short his attendance at the Nato summit in London after Justin Trudeau, Boris Johnson and Emmanuel Macron were caught on camera at a Nato reception at Buckingham Palace ridiculing the US president for staging lengthy press conferences.
The world leaders were overheard apparently discussing Trump's lateness because of a long press conference he had given at a bilateral meeting with Trudeau.
The notoriously thin-skinned Trump cancelled a planned press conference and branded the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, "two-faced" after the video showed him leading the laughter at Trump’s expense together with other US allies.

Teddy the baby sugar glider was rescued near Glenreagh, north-eastern NSW, during a recent bushfire. Now old enough to eat small insects, she has doubled in weight since her rescue. The unprecedented bushfires afflicting Australia’s east coast have left rescuers working frantically to heal and house the countless creatures caught in the blaze.
@wireswildliferescue offers a short rescue and immediate care course that equips people to work with common species. Volunteers can nominate their level of commitment. They can decide to be carers or rescuers or both – or help with various administrative tasks. That’s how Kristina-Lee Willis, a 29-year-old from Corindi Beach (two hours north of Port Macquarie), ended up with Teddy, the baby sugar glider. #BREAKING: The Medevac law will be repealed after a “secret deal” was struck between the government and key crossbencher, Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie.
The medical evacuation law, which was passed against the government’s will in the last sitting week of 2018, will be scrapped after Lambie joined One Nation senators and sided with the government in the Senate on Wednesday morning.
The government won the vote to repeal the law 37 votes to 35.
Lambie told the Senate she had made a “really hard decision” to support the legislation’s repeal, but had done so because the government had agreed to a proposal that would improve medical treatment for refugees held in offshore detention.
She has refused to disclose details of her proposal. 👆Click the link in bio to follow today's politics blog with the latest developments.

#EXCLUSIVE: NSW government data obtained by @GuardianAustralia reveals more than 10% of all areas covered by NSW National Parks has already been burned in this season's bushfires, including 20% of the Blue Mountains world heritage area. Last fire season 80,000 hectares were lost: since July, ten times that amount has burned to the ground.
The destruction of vast swathes of the Gondwana rainforest world heritage area in the north of the state is a "global tragedy" and a "national crisis", said Mark Graham, a Nature Conservation Council ecologist, while bushfires rage on in the Katoomba area, across the way from the Three Sisters.

All mobile phone users in China registering new SIM cards must submit to facial recognition scans.
The measure, which came into effect on Sunday, was described by the ministry of industry and information as a way to “protect the legitimate rights and interest of citizens in cyberspace”. However, the technology makes it easier for phone and internet users to be tracked, raising concern over privacy.
Human rights advocates have described the measure as a step towards a “dystopian surveillance state”. Follow the link in bio to find out more.

"It's happening now and this is what climate change looks like." Melinda Plesman, who lost her home in the #NSWbushfires, brought the charred remains to Parliament House today to send a message to both major parties on #climatechange. Plesman and her partner, Dean Kennedy, lost their family home of 35 years after #bushfires tore through Nymboida, south of Grafton in NSW.
With some of the ashes and burnt out remains of her home, Plesman said she wanted to show Scott Morrison the direct result of climate change: "I’m losing my home, whole communities are losing their homes … and the prime minister said we’re not allowed to talk about it. He said he was going to pray for us. And that was the last straw."
.
But she also criticised Labor for not wanting to discuss the link between climate change and bushfires. "That is what is absolutely terrible. We’ve got no leadership, we’ve got no discussion, we’ve got no debate, we’ve got nothing."
.

A kangaroo and joey race from the fire front at the North Black Range, Palerang fire on Sunday.
There are 130 fires burning in NSW amid very dry and windy conditions. A fire affecting more than 20,000 hectares is being controlled in the Tallaganda national park, in the Bombay and #Braidwood areas.
@GuardianAustralia photographer @mikepbowers was in the vicinity over the weekend and captured these images, which have become all too common – including of a kangaroo and joey outrunning the flames and cockatoos in the smoke. Click the link in bio to see more of his photos from near the scene of the fire.
Another fire is burning to the south of the #Katoomba and Leura area in the #BlueMountains. It has burned more than 390 hectares and is being controlled. An emergency warning is in place for a fire at #Currowan, north of #BatemansBay. It has burned more than 11,500 hectares and is not yet under control.

Ohio has introduced one of the most extreme anti-abortion bills to date, which requires doctors to "reimplant an ectopic pregnancy" into a woman’s uterus – a procedure that doesn't even exist in medical science and is currently medically impossible – or face charges of "abortion murder".
.
The move comes amid a wave of increasingly severe anti-abortion bills introduced across America as conservative Republican politicians seek to ban abortion outright.
An ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition, which can kill a woman if the embryonic tissue grows unchecked. In addition to ordering doctors to do the impossible or face criminal charges, House Bill 413 bans abortion outright and defines a fertilized egg as an "unborn child".
.
Ohio passed a six-week abortion ban earlier this year called the “heartbeat bill”, which banned abortion before most women know they are pregnant. Reproductive rights groups immediately sued, and the bill never went into effect. Abortion is currently legal in all 50 US states.
