‘Euphoria’ Season 3 Is Delayed Indefinitely — Here’s What the Cast Is Doing Instead
“Euphoria” Season 3 has been delayed indefinitely, meaning one of HBO’s most popular shows won’t be back on the air for even longer. Season 3 was previously expected to drop in 2025, but that time frame could further change if cameras don’t start rolling in the coming months. “HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO spokesperson told Variety . “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.” Several “Euphoria” cast members are now a part of Hollywood’s latest class of A-listers — Zendaya is fresh off the success of “Dune: Part Two,” Jacob Elordi’s star catapulted for his roles in “Saltburn” and “Priscilla,” and Sydney Sweeney recently starred in the blockbuster rom-com “Anyone but You” and the horror film “Immaculate.” Since “Euphoria” takes place in a high school, there are many rumors that the show may jump ahead in time and age up the characters to be college-aged. While the actors certainly have busy schedules, Season 3 of “Euphoria” is also complicated by the death of cast member Angus Cloud, who died at the age of 25 in July 2023. Cloud portrayed Fez on the show, who is an endearing drug dealer and friend to Zendaya’s Rue and other characters. Cloud’s unexpected death delayed development of Season 3, in addition to the Hollywood strikes that shutdown the entertainment industry for much of last year. Scripts for Season 3 are not yet completed. In the meantime, here’s what Zendaya, Elordi, Sweeney and more “Euphoria” stars are working on in the meantime: In the aftermath of the massively successful “Dune: Part Two,” Zendaya has another buzzy project already lined up: Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” on April 26. The movie follows a love triangle between Tennis players and past flames, and it co-stars “The Crown” Actor Josh O’Connor and “West Side Story” star Mike Faist. “Challengers” was supposed to debut last year but was delayed due to the actors strike and moved to this spring, where anticipation has only increased. There’s also the question of a third “Dune” movie and if director Denis Villeneuve will adapt the next book in the series, “Dune Messiah.” He and Zendaya have both expressed interest in making a threequel, but it hasn’t been greenlit yet. There’s also the possibility of a fourth “Spider-Man” movie, where Zendaya could reprise her MJ role, but Marvel has been tight-lipped. “Would we be down? I mean of course,” Zendaya said when asked about making another “Dune” movie. “Any time Denis calls it’s a yes from me. I’m excited to see what happens. I started ‘Messiah’ and I was like, ‘Woah, I’m only shooting the first movie. Let me just go back to the first one.’ It’s so much to take in, but there’s no better hands with better care and love for it than Denis.” Sydney Sweeney recently delivered Neon its biggest box office opening ever thanks to the launch of the horror movie “Immaculate,” which she also produced. This box office win followed in the footsteps of “Anyone but You,” which Sweeney starred in opposite Glen Powell and powered to a huge $216 million at the worldwide box office. Sweeney currently has a “Barbarella” remake in development at Sony Pictures, the studio behind “Anyone but You.” She’s also been fielding script offers for a second movie that would reunite her with Powell. Her upcoming film roles also include the thriller “Echo Valley,” in which she stars opposite Julianne Moore, and “Eden,” the new survival thriller from Ron Howard that co-stars Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Jude Law and Daniel Brühl. Jacon Elordi’s film career boomed in 2023 thanks to the releases of Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” in which he played music icon Elvis Presley, and Emerald Fennell’s “Saltburn,” which became a Social Media sensation thanks to the chemistry between Elordi and co-star Barry Keoghan. He’s pairing with two major directors for his next movie projects. He’s playing The Monster in Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of “Frankenstein,” which includes a star-studded ensemble featuring Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz. He’s also headlining Paul Schrader’s new movie, “Oh Canada,” alongside Richard Gere, Michael Imperioli and Uma Thurman. Another film that should be arriving sometime this year is “On Swift Horses,” which also stars Daisy Edgar Jones. On the television front, Elordi is starring in the miniseries “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.” Based on the book by Richard Flanagan, the show hails from “Snowtown” and “Nitram” filmmaker Justin Kurzel. In 2023, Schafer starred in the successful franchise prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” in which she plays the cousin to a young version of antagonist President SNOW. Looking ahead, Schafer has been cast in Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming film “Kinds of Kindness,” in which the director re-teams with Emma Stone following the success of Oscar winner “Poor Things.” The new film is set for release this summer. She has also been cast in Zach Strauss’ psychological horror film “Palette” with Noomi Rapace. Additionally, Schafer’s upcoming film “Cuckoo,” a horror directed by Tillman Singer, debuted in February at the Berlin International Film Festival and is set for release in May. Domingo, who portrays Rue’s sponsor Ali, is booked and busy following acclaimed performances in “Rustin” and “The Color Purple.” For the former, he was nominated for an Academy Award, one of many recognitions this awards season for his portrayals of overlooked civil rights activist Bayard Rustin and “The Color Purple” antagonist Mister. Next up, Domingo is working on the limited series “The Madness,” directed by Clement Virgo for Netflix; the project is a conspiracy thriller in which Domingo stars as a media pundit who happens upon a murder in the woods. He has also been cast as patriarch Joe Jackson in the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic , directed by Antoine Fuqua, which is set for release in 2025. Moreover, Domingo is set to direct and star in a biopic about Nat King Cole . Apatow recently moved to New York and has pursued opportunities in theater. She appeared in the off-Broadway production of “Little Shop of Horrors” as Audrey and a West End production of “Cabaret” in 2023. She discussed her move to New York City and her career on stage in a recent tour of her West Village apartment for Architectural Digest . Per AD, she is also working on writing, directing and producing projects of her own. Abrams wowed audiences when his character Ethan starred in the meta school play in Season 2 of “Euphoria,” which dramatized the lives of the show’s main characters. Ethan was also known as the love interest of Barbie Ferreira’s character Kat, who will not return for Season 3. Up next, Abrams is starring in “Wolfs” with Brad Pitt and George Clooney; the A-list duo also produce the film about professional fixers assigned to the same task. In addition to the “Oceans” alumni, Abrams stars in the psychological thriller alongside Amy Ryan and Poorna Jagannathan. In 2023, Abrams appeared in the thriller “The Line,” which also featured his late Euphoria co-star Angus Cloud, and the coming-of-age drama “The Starling Girl.” Fike joined Season 2 of “Euphoria” as Elliot, a new character that struggles with drug use and is in a love triangle with Zendaya’s Rue and Schafer’s Jules. He told Variety that he wasn’t sure about returning for Season 3; while he said it “would be dope,” he added, “I don’t really talk to them anymore.” Meanwhile, Fike is starring in the 2024 comedy/drama “Little Death” directed by Jack Begert, which also involves exploration of drug addiction as it follows a TV writer crossing paths with two addicts on the hunt for a missing backpack. Fike’s cast mates include David Schwimmer, Gaby Hoffman, Talia Ryder and Jena Malone. He also put out his second studio album “Sunburn” in 2023, and has performances scheduled for several festivals this year, including Bottle Rock, Governors Ball, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. King plays Rue’s mom, who struggles with parenting her daughter through her addiction journey. Most recently, King appeared in the 2023 prehistoric-set film “65” starring Adam Driver and the 2024 short film “The Rebel Girls.” King recently joked during a comedy set that she hadn’t paid her rent in six months due to the delay of “Euphoria” Season 3. Dane is balancing a slate of projects, including “Bad Boys Ride or Die,” the fourth “Bad Boys” film, which is set to release on June 7. He is a newcomer to the popular buddy cop franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Dane is also set to appear in the upcoming LuckyChap-produced film “Borderline” and Malik Vitthal’s thriller “Family Secrets,” which was recently reported to be in production in Montenegro. Additional upcoming projects include Kelly Blatz’ feature “One Fast Move,” which also stars Edward James Olmos. Prior to the latest update on Season 3, it was already confirmed that Ferreira, who played Kat, would not be returning to “Euphoria” after the first two seasons. Following reports of conflict with creator Sam Levinson, Ferreira said on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” that it was a “mutual decision” for her to depart the series. “I don’t think there was a place for [Kat] to go,” Ferreira said. “I think there were places she could have gone. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show. I don’t know if it was going to do her justice, and I think both parties knew that. I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t want to play that, and I think they didn’t want that either.” Beyond “Euphoria,” Ferreira has several projects slated for release. In 2024, she will star in the comedy “Bob Trevino Likes It,” which follows a woman searching for her estranged father. She is also in the Blumhouse-produced horror film “House of Spoils” with Ariana DeBose, also set for release in 2024. On “Euphoria,” Walton’s Ashtray is known for his close relationship with the late Angus Cloud’s character Fez, who was an adoptive older brother to him on the show. Season 2 concluded with Ashtray meeting an uncertain fate; while it seems he might not have survived the events of the finale, fans will have to wait and see what becomes of the tough-as-nails kid. Outside of the HBO series, Walton can be seen in the upcoming Hulu true crime drama series “Under the Bridge,” which stars Riley Keough and Lily Gladstone. Based on the book by Rebecca Godfrey, the miniseries is about the murder of 14-year-old Reena Virk. In addition to acting, the 17-year-old Walton also keeps busy as a professional boxer.
