Stephen Colbert has issued a "sincere" apology to
Kate Middleton following poking fun at the Princess just days before she announced her
cancer diagnosis. The Princess of Wales revealed her cancer diagnosis on Friday, with the announcement broadcast around the world following weeks of speculation in regards to her health and whereabouts. Earlier this year she underwent abdominal surgery at The
London Clinic , with speculation rife before it ramped up again after a photo she shared on Mother's Day. Sharing a snap on Mother's Day, in a bid to seemingly put an end to speculation, the Princess of Wales could be seen beaming with her three children. BBC Studios) Amid the chatter and speculation in regards to the Princess' whereabouts, in the March 13 episode of The
Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the host referenced a cruel and harsh rumour about the Princess and her marriage in a segment poking fun at the online speculation surrounding her. Speaking on his show, following the news of Kate's cancer diagnosis, Stephen issued an apology when he said: “You know, folks, I don’t know if you have noticed, but we do a lot of shows and I tell a lot of jokes, and I tell jokes about a lot of different things, mostly what everybody’s talking about. "And for the last six weeks to two months, everybody has been talking about the mystery of Kate Middleton’s disappearance from public life. And two weeks ago, we did some jokes about that mystery and all of the reporting about that. "And when I made those jokes, that upset some people and — even before her diagnosis was revealed, and I can understand that. I mean, a lot of my jokes have upset people in the past. And I’m sure some of my jokes will upset people in the future. "But there is a standard that I try to hold myself to. And that is, I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy." Elsewhere in his apology, Stephen said: "I do not make light of somebody elses' tragedy. I don't know whether her prognosis is a tragic one," he added, noting how Princess Kate is the future
Queen of
England and will be getting the best care available. "Regardless of what it is," he said, Stephen noted how he knows "that any cancer diagnosis is harrowing for the patient and for the family". He then added: "And though I'm sure they don't need it from me, I and everyone here at
