Graeme Souness believes Gareth Southgate isn't cut out for the
Manchester United job. Erik ten Hag faces an increasingly uncertain future at Old Trafford , with Sir Jim Ratcliffe expected to make wholesale changes at Carrington at the end of the season. The
British billionaire has already made great progress on his mission to rebuild the Red Devils, forking out millions on revitalising the boardroom. Ratcliffe has shown no sign of slowing down either and, with Ten Hag's contract set to expire in 2025, he must soon decide on the Dutchman's future. Southgate has been one of several managers heavily linked with taking the hot-seat at Old Trafford recently. The 53-year-old has enjoyed plenty of success during his time as
England boss but, as the Euros approaches, many supporters have been getting cold feet and questioning his future. Liverpool legend said: "This is a golden period for English
Football. I would stick with this group of players if I was Southgate. "I think they can only get better given the age group. Manchester United is an enormous job, Gareth had one go at club management and that didn’t go too well for him. "He was very fortunate to get the job but now he’s in a glorious position. This group is getting better and better and haven’t peaked yet so I would sit tight. "I don’t think it would be a good fit [for Southgate at Manchester United]. I’ve met him and he comes across as a thoroughly decent man. "But that job carries a hell of a lot of weight. Every move and decision you make is scrutinised. My advice to him would be no. I don’t see there being a quick fix at United." During the March international break, Southgate was quizzed on his future. As quoted by Sky Sports , the England boss said: "I think I've answered this every time I've sat with you. My focus is the European Championship. "If we did something, a contract here [with England] before, everybody would be saying, 'Why are you signing a contract before a Euros where you've got to prove yourself'. "I'm certainly not going to speak to anybody else ahead of that. I never have. I've been here eight years in the job. I wouldn't entertain speaking to anybody else when I'm in a job."
