Credit: Hulu Epic battles, scandalous drug manufacturers, space adventure and the Revolutionary War. These are just some of the things that promise to distract and delight us this weekend. A couple shows are wrapping up this weekend, while a handful of others are debuting new seasons or series premieres. I’ve also included a couple classics just for fun. So, without further adieu, let’s dive right in! MORE FROM FORBES New Shows And Movies To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Disney+ And More By Erik Kain Shows Only Murders In The Building Season 3 (Hulu) Only Murders In The Building is one of the most charming murder mystery comedies on TV. The new season, starring Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez returned earlier this week and I can’t wait to start watching. Season 2 was a bit weaker than the excellent first season, but by no means unwatchable. One of its biggest flaws was the totally pointless cameo from Amy Schumer (why?). Hopefully the guest stars this time around, Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep, are a better fit. Outlander Season 7 Midseason Finale (Starz) Hey look at me! I’m all caught up on Oultander! In Season 7, Episode 7 (which aired two weeks ago) the Starz historical drama left us on a pretty wild cliffhanger. Hopefully that’s resolved in the midseason finale this weekend. Jaime Fraser is heading off to war as well, and things are looking rather grim for everyone. After this episode we’ll have months to wait for the second half of the season, and then another long break before the eighth and final season comes out. Men In Kilts Season 2 Premiere (Starz) The Outlander break will be a bit more tolerable for fans of Sam Hueghan and Graham McTavish thanks to the return of the delightful travel show Men In Kilts: A Road Trip With Sam And Graham. The first season took us all around Scotland with the charming pair of well-dressed actors. The second sees them hop across the pond to New Zealand. This airs right after Outlander and for the next few weeks. Strange New Worlds Season 2 Finale (Paramount+) I’ve finally started watching Strange New Worlds on Paramount. It’s definitely the best new Star Trek show, or at least the most faithful to the spirit of the franchise. Previously, that title was held by The Orville, which isn’t even a real Star Trek show! In any case, I’m still way behind but I’m enjoying the show a lot. Anson Mount is so great as Captain Pike, and the rest of the cast is really top-notch. I’m excited to catch up. The Season 2 finale airs this weekend. (I also need to catch up on Picard ). Painkiller (Netflix) Researching Painkiller— a fictional retelling of real events surrounding the opioid crisis—turned me on to a series I haven’t watched yet: Dopesick on Hulu. Now I have two shows to watch about this atrocity! I hear Dopesick is excellent and Michael Keaton is terrific in it. But I do love me some Matthew Broderick as well, and this looks quite good. Billions Season 7 (Showtime / Paramount+) I’ve never watched a single episode of Billions but it must be popular because it’s made it all the way to Season 7. The story of hedge manager Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) and US attorney Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) focuses on financial crime and is based on true stories. It looks good! I just never got around to it. Any readers of mine who are fans, please let me know what you think. Is it worth investing my time into? (Get it, investing ?!?) Movies I’m including two classic films in my guide this weekend. Both, ironically, feature Harrison Ford, though he has a leading role in one and a bit part in another. Why am I including these movies? Because they’re both celebrating major anniversaries. First off . . . The Fugitive (VOD) The Fugitive landed in theaters on August 6th, 1993 and pretty much blew everyone’s mind. It was a massive hit, and made Harrison Ford an even bigger movie star than he already was. The film spent six weeks as the #1 movie at the box office, grossing $370 million globally on a measly $44 million budget. It was nominated for 7 Academy Awards and Tommy Lee Jones took home Best Supporting Actor. Ironically, I just watched this movie with my kids a couple weeks ago because I’d been itching to show them, and they were both hooked immediately. American Graffiti (Netflix) George Lucas’s first big hit released exactly fifty years ago today (August 11th, 1973) and predates Star Wars by four years. It was certainly nothing at all like the space adventures that came to define Lucas’s work and reputation, but it remains one of the best end of childhood / coming of age / high school is over movies of all time. Harrison Ford’s part is much smaller, but a good preview of things to come. For a feel good movie this weekend, you could do worse. Red White & Royal Blue (Amazon Prime) Based on the book by Casey McQuiston, this new romantic comedy on Amazon Prime is about the son of the US president and a British prince who fall in love. Since we live in a world that still frowns on that sort of thing, the pair have to keep their romance a secret. Uma Thurman and Stephen Fry both have supporting roles in this one. The new movie has a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics, but audiences are rating it at 95% so it’s clearly pleasing fans of the book. That’s good! Gran Turismo (In Theaters) I first heard about the Gran Turismo movie when I interviewed David Harbour ( Stranger Things ) back in December of last year. It’s a combination true story / video game adaptation about racecars that also serves as something of an extended ad for Sony’s Gran Turismo games. Movies as ads for other products? Now where have I heard that one before . . . ? This one isn’t scoring well with critics, unfortunately. 54% on Rotten Tomatoes is bad news.
