The number of people who have died in
UK hospitals after contracting
Coronavirus has risen by 449 in 24 hours.
The increase consists of 331 in England, 83 in
Scotland, 14 in Northern
Ireland and 21 in Wales.
UK-wide figures from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) are yet to be published, so the data are taken from each nation’s individual reporting.
It brings the working total to 29,876.
Of the new deaths announced in
England today, 54 occurred on May 5, 121 occurred on May 4 and 28 occurred on May 3. The remainder stretch back as far as March 13.
The figures published today by NHS England show April 8 continues to have the highest number for the most hospital deaths occurring on a single day, with a current total of 874.
Of the 22,049 confirmed reported deaths so far in hospitals in England of people who tested positive for Covid-19, 11,575 (52%) have been people aged 80 and over while 8,547 (39%) were 60 to 79.
But the government tally, when it is released later today, will be significantly higher as it includes deaths in care homes and the community. Here’s a quick primer on what all the different numbers mean and how to understand them.
