DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall has died at the age of 56.
The musician was known for producing Primal Scream’s 1991 album Screamadelica and was seen as a key figure in the acid house scene of the late 1980s.
Andrew’s management confirmed that he had suffered a pulmonary embolism and died in hospital on Monday. They said in a statement: “We are deeply sorry to announce that Andrew Weatherall, the noted DJ and musician passed away in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17th February 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital, London.
“The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately the blood clot reached his heart.
“His death was swift and peaceful.”
As well as his work on Screamadelica, Andrew was acclaimed for his DJ collaborations on Happy Mondays‘ Hallelujah, New Order‘s World In Motion and Primal Scream’s Loaded.
He also founded the record label Boy’s Own Recordings and the production outfit Bocca Juniors.
Lead singer of The Charlatans Tim Burgess was among the first to pay tribute on social media.
