Poundland has announced that it’s waving goodbye to some of its £1 products, suggesting the days of a quick dash for bargain toiletries, jumbo bags of crisps and hen party tat are numbered.
The bargain store is ditching its famous “Everything’s £1” slogan as it rolls out pricer products nationwide. While you’ll find some products priced at just 50p, others will now set you back £2 and £5.
The move to officially ditch the price pledge follows a trial in 24 West Midlands stores. And despite the change, the Poundland will be keeping its name, which hasn’t gone down well with some die-hard fans.
“Poundland has ditched its £1 price on everything, but will still be called Poundland. I am not quidding you,” one tweeted.The announcement comes just days after the chain opened a new store on Edinburgh’s flagship Princes Street to divided opinion from local residents.
Poundland said the new price rollout would allow it to deliver a “broader range of items at simple prices in three key categories – household goods, health and beauty, and grocery”.
Three-quarters of products will continue to sell for £1, it insisted.
The shift was, perhaps, an inevitability. After all, Freddo chocolate bars have increased in price by 200% since year 2000, so it was only a matter of time before someone started questioning the sale of £1 sex toys.
Still, we can’t help but feel a little sad about the end of such cheap thrills. Yes, we know we should be investing in better quality products that last longer for the sake of the planet, but Poundland’s announcement marks the end of an era.
