Conwell, an up-and-coming professional who competed for the United States at the Rio Olympics, stopped Day in the final frame of a scheduled 10-round bout on the undercard of Saturday night’s Oleksandr Usyk-Chazz Witherspoon show in
Chicago, after which the New Yorker failed to regain consciousness. The 27-year-old Day underwent emergency brain surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he remains in a coma. Day’s trainer, Joe Higgins, told Newsday the fighter’s condition is “extremely grave”.
