Lewis Hamilton was in second for Mercedes, with the Ferrari of
Sebastian Vettel in third. Max Verstappen was in fourth place for Red Bull but has a five-place grid penalty for taking a new engine. Valtteri Bottas claimed fifth for Mercedes with McLaren’s Carlos Sainz in sixth.
Leclerc took the top spot with a display of precision driving in which he was in a different class to the rest of the field, while Ferrari confirmed their car had huge pace over one lap in Sochi.
