It’s been 25 years since its release, but Saturday Night still has the ability to fill many a dancefloor.
While the song (and its dance routine) is fondly remembered, Whigfield – the artist behind the one-hit-wonder – has somewhat disappeared into the showbiz abyss in the ensuing years. However, that all changed on Tuesday morning when the Danish singer made a rare
British TV appearance.
But there was was not a plaited pig tail or a turbie towel in sight as she sat down for a chat with the actress who plays Lorraine Kelly on Lorraine. Seeing Whigfield – real name Sannie Carlson – again after all these years gave viewers a serious dose of nostalgia. Just caught a glimpse of ITV morning tele. Lorraine interviewing Whigfield??!! “When you’re so young and so much happens to you…”Saturday Night hit the top spot of the
UK chart upon its release in September 1994, making Whigfield the first act to enter at number one with a debut single.
As well as topping the charts here, Saturday Night also reached number one in
Germany,
Ireland,
Italy,
Spain and Switzerland.
Since then, Whigfield has continued to make
music, and more recently has been recording under her real name Sannie. However, her efforts failed to replicate the success of her first single. She did come close to representing her home nation of Denmark at Eurovision in 2018, but ultimately fell out of the race to do so.
But Whigfield will be back on stage next year when she tours with the Venga Boys. We’d better get perfecting that dance routine. READ MORE... Lorraine Kelly Almost Screams Her Studio Down After Being Terrified By A Clown In Live Prank ITV Plots Daytime Shake Up In Bid To Replace The Jeremy Kyle Show
