Once upon a time you would only get a Lotus Biscoff at the hairdressers alongside your cuppa, but it seems the beloved biscuit is having a revival.
The caramelised sweet treat, which originates from a Belgian bakery back in 1932, is no longer just a biscuit. It’s also a spread, a cheesecake, and (thanks to the news from Costa Coffee this week) a muffin.
As two very keen fans – who already sing the spread’s praises and eat it straight out the jar – we took it upon ourselves to try all the Biscoff offerings (Biscofferings?) and rank them in order of deliciousness.

UK office, who tried it after we did. It’s a vanilla cheesecake, with a normal biscuit base, topped with Biscoff spread and Biscoff crumbs.
It’s absolutely delicious – a subtle, yet consistent taste of Biscoff that isn’t too sickly or overpowering, and leaves you wanting more. Someone else said it reminds them of Angel Delight. “It tastes like my childhood,” he said.
Honestly, it’s amazing. It’s like a biscuit sandwich, with crunch on the top and crunch on the bottom, and a luxurious creamy centre sandwiched between. Incredible. Crunchy Spread – 9/10Where can I get it? Sainsbury’s, £2 a jarYour life will change once you learn about this spread. If you have it on toast with butter, it’s like heaven on your tongue. Spread it on biscuits, and it’s just as good.
Or just spoon it out of the jar – which we did, while trialling all the products, and ended up having far too much. It’s so versatile, but also quite dangerous to have in your house because you won’t be able to resist.
The crunch is a great addition, in our opinion, like an extra little treat – but you can also get a smooth version if the textural contrast is too much.Doughnuts – 8.5/10Where can I get it? Krispy Kreme, £1.90This looks like traditional caramel/toffee doughnuts with biscuit crumb on top – but it’s so much better than that. The words “It’s fucking delicious” were uttered shortly after we took a bite.
It’s like a triple Biscoff whammy – the gooey, creamy centre has a Biscoff taste, there’s Biscoff-flavoured icing and the crumbles on top.
We thought we’d only get the biscuit-y taste from the crumbles, but we were wrong. That being said, it is rather sickly. We had half each and that was enough – so maybe share with someone else if you buy one. Biscuit – 8/10Where can I get it? In major supermarkets, £1 a pack This is the original. The OG. The one-of-a-kind. Of course, it’s not fourth on our list because it’s bad in any way... but seeing as the Biscoff trend has upped its game, it seems quite plain by comparison. Why have a biscuit when you can have a Biscoff-filled cheesecake?
It has a strong crunch, is really good with tea or coffee, is moreish and isn’t sickly. These biscuits have such a distinctive taste – they’re not overpowering, but you know what it is as soon as you try it.Muffin – 5/10Where can I get it? Costa (autumn 2019), £2.25The muffin is the latest addition to the Lotus range, having launched in Costa stores on 5 September. It’s a muffin with Biscoff spread in the middle, topped with toffee icing and a biscuit itself.
It’s not that we don’t like it – the muffin itself is nice and moist – but we’re not getting big enough Biscoff vibes from it. It has a strong smell of butterscotch/carrot cake, but tastes like gingerbread. There’s also the toffee icing on top, making it more of a gingery/toffee muffin with a biscuit on top.
Perhaps this isn’t one for the die-hard Biscoff fans, if you’re as obsessed as we are. Biscoff and Go – 4/10Where can I get it? In local convenience stores (Nisa, Costcutter and Spar), £1These launched earlier this year in the UK, consisting of bread sticks with a small pot of Biscoff smooth spread.
The breadsticks are pretty salty and savoury, quite a contrast from the sweet dip – and perhaps not a pairing we’d put together.
In fact, the sticks on their own are very average. We basically wanted more spread to cover up the taste, so we might as well just get a jar of it instead.
