Wimbledon commentator Andrew Castle has been blasted for commenting on
Mirka Federer’s ring during the final between
Roger Federer and
Novak Djokovic.
Mirka Federer, the wife of Wimbledon finalist Roger Federer, was seen in the crowd for his Grand Slam title match against Novak Djokovic.
During a tense match that went to five sets, commentator Andrew Castle suggested that Mirka’s wedding ring looked expensive.
He said: “Doesn’t look like costume jewellery, does it, on the finger?”
But some Twitter users weren’t happy with his comment, and blasted the former British
tennis player.
“You’re paid to comment on the tennis, not Mirka’s jewellery,” said one tennis fan.
“Andrew Castle going on about money earned and now Mirka not having costume jewellery on,” said another. “He’s coming across very bitter. Roger Grand Slams 20 - Andrew 0.”
A third fan said: “If you can’t commentate constructively on the tennis, then keep quiet. No need whatsoever to comment on the value of Mirka Federer’s jewellery.”
Another Twitter user said: “Not impressed that A Castle feels it’s appropriate to comment on Mirka Federer’s jewellery. None of his business [& drawing attention to her -risky]. He’s meant to be commentating on this final!”
Federer is looking to win his 21st Grand Slam title today, just a month ahead of his 38th birthday.
He’s the second oldest men’s finalist in Wimbledon history.
Meanwhile, Djokovic is aiming for his 16th Grand Slam title.
It’s the 48th professional meeting between Federer and Djokovic, with the Serbian ahead in the head-to-head, winning 25 of them.
The Wimbledon final went the distance in one of the tightest Grand Slam finals of all time.
The match went to the fifth set, and couldn’t be settled in regulation time.
Djokovic won the first set in a 7-5 tie-break, before crumbling to conceded the second set 6-1.
He won the third set in another tie break, before losing the fourth set 6-4.
