Talk of
Sixers point guard
Ben Simmons desperately wanting to be L.A. bound is either extremely premature or patently false at this point in the All-Star's young career. Frankly, it's a bad topic of discussion and really only serves the purpose of being future stock for hot take artists and negative fans to say "I told you so" if they do succeed in driving this talented player away from Philadelphia.
While nobody knows for sure how Ben feels about possibly one day wearing purple and gold, recent comments made by Lakers president
Magic Johnson sure did a lot to stoke the fires of this frustrating unfounded rumor. As an NBA legend and Hall of Famer who played the point with above-average length, Johnson would be the perfect mentor to the similarly-framed Simmons. But his involvement and influence with a team other than the 76ers - let alone the one that fans fear may poach the 22-year-old - complicates things considerably.
For those who would prefer to err on the side of caution, Sixers GM
Elton Brand is on your side. In an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic on Monday afternoon, Brand explained that the organization is thrilled with Simmons seeking out professional assistance, just not from Magic Johnson.
So there you have it - crisis averted. Simmons is eligible to sign a five-year rookie scale max extension with the 76ers this summer that would pay him roughly $150 million to stay in Philadelphia through 2024-25. Even if you are a fan who clings to this notion that Simmons sees sunshine in his future, consider the fact that his pal LeBron James will be nearing 40 years old by the time Simmons becomes an unrestricted free agent.
