THE WORLD is fearing the apocalypse after the sun turned blood red over Britain today.
People were astounded by the solar spectacle, which left some believing it could even be the end of the world.
Twitter users took to the social media platform to question why the sun has turned an ominous crimson, leaving UK skies from south west England to the north of Scotland with a bizarre yellow tinge.
Marley Bennett tweeted: "Does this mean the end of the world is nigh? #redsun #bristol."
Bethnoir wrote: "The red sun has gone, light fading to orange, smell of burning #apocalypse #redsun #sarahadust #StormOphelia #Bristol."
Katie Armstrong tweeted: "It’s like the end of the world is coming!!!!! #StormOphelia #REDSUN #HurricaneOphelia."
Referencing zombie films, user Cromwell wrote: "#redsun Remember, water, batteries, food, in that order. Aim for the head, it's the only way they can be stopped."
Firetrapdiva wrote: "Today has a weird feel about it. The air is strange, the sky is weird & the sun is red. Someone just said it's the sign of impending doom lol...cheers for that & Happy Monday to you too #RedSun."
And Louise Gray tweeted: "Odd old sky out there today and eerily calm... It’s like something out of an apocalypse film #REDSUN #HurricaneOphelia."
Even Gary Lineker jumped on the bandwagon, warning the red sun has signalled the end of the world.
The football pundit tweeted a picture of the spectacle and wrote: "The sky is eerie. The end is nigh."
But the peculiar phenomenon is actually the result of Tropical Storm Ophelia sucking up winds from the Saharan Desert and blowing dust across Spain and up towards Britain.
The Met Office tweeted: "#Ophelia has drawn Saharan dust north to the UK, making the sun appear red this morning."
Meteorologist tweeted a video of the sky, and wrote: "The sky in #London has turned into a CRAZY(!) reddish brown colour. It feels incredibly weird...and getting more weird by the minute. So many people are looking at the sky and taking photos. #Ophelia #SaharanDust #FireParticles #RedSun"
Others compared the menacing red sun and yellow sky to that in the new Blade Runner 2049.
Luke Harrison wrote: "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning. Red sky at midday, this is basically bladerunner #redsun."
While the Barbican Centre tweeted a picture of the building in the yellow sky opposite an image of the film's lead Ryan Gosling.
The centre wrote: "Is our #BladeRunner2049 campaign too much...? @RyanGosling @bladerunner #RedSun."
