Bohemian Rhapsody, directed by Bryan Singer — who was fired from the film before it was completed — was a shocking upset winner at Sunday's 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The drama, a biography about the rock band Queen, bested heavy favorite A Star Is Born in the Best Motion Picture - Drama category. In fact, A Star Is Born, Bradley Cooper's directorial debut and a remake of the classic Hollywood story, lost all but one of its five nominations. Cooper lost in the best director category to Roma filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, star Lady Gaga was defeated by Glenn Close (The Wife) in best actress in a drama, and Cooper fell to Bohemian Rhapsodystar Rami Malek in best actor. All told, A Star Is Born — which is still expected to compete for multiple Oscars at next month's Academy Awards — won only best original song, for hit track "Shallow." (Lady Gaga was among that award's winners.)
Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't the only upset victor on the night: In the musical and comedy category, Green Book topped Vice, which led all films with six Golden Globe nominations, for best picture.
The film's co-star, Mahershala Ali, also won at the Golden Globes in the supporting actor category, and Green Book won best screenplay.
Like A Star Is Born, Vice failed to win in a majority of its categories — Amy Adams lost in supporting actress to Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk), the film's script fell to Green Book and costar Sam Rockwell was bested by Ali. Bale, however, did win in the best actor in a musical or comedy for playing former Vice President Dick Cheney.
On the television side, The Americansand The Kominsky Methodwere the best drama and musical or comedy winners, respectively. Actors Sandra Oh, Richard Madden, Rachel Brosnahan and Michael Douglas all won Golden Globes, as well.
In addition to the competitive winners, this year's ceremony honored Jeff Bridges, who was the 2019 recipient of the Golden Globes' annual Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement. Television legend Carol Burnett also received an honorary award, the first-ever Carol Burnett award, which was created to honor achievement in television.

Mary Trump 'energized' as uncle 'Donald's campaign spirals into chaos'
Mar 29, 2024
Donald Trump's campaign is in chaos, and his niece says she's energized.Mary Trump, the niece of the former president and a psychologist by trade, has previously been critical of her uncle. On Thursday, she said her uncle's failures are adding up.ALSO READ: A neuroscientist reveals how Trump and Biden's cognitive impairments are different"As the RNC’s fundraising falters and Donald’s campaign spirals into chaos, I am energized!" she said in a Substack post. She then continued:"When Donald dominates the news cycle, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed. Every bad headline has a negative impact. But then I remember something crucial: There’s usually more to the story than meets the eye. I’m determined to cut through the media noise and share with you all the good that happened this week. These are the headlines we need to remain energized and hopeful that the media largely ignored."Mary Trump goes on to highlight President Joe Biden's recent fundraising hauls."President Biden’s $155 million+ war chest has just received another turbo boost, bringing the total of cash on hand to at least $180 million. (By comparison, between his campaign and the RNC, Donald barely has over $50 million — and continues to drain the accounts to cover his absolutely staggering legal expenses)," she wrote. "This is a development that could significantly increase Biden’s ability to influence the narrative in crucial swing states."This, she says, also tells us a lot about voter excitement for Biden."While critics have expressed doubts about the degree to which the Democratic base is fired up as compared to 2020, today’s $25 million fundraiser, raised with donations ranging from $250 to $500,000, should put any doubts to rest — yes, we are absolutely behind President Biden and Vice President Harris and we’re in this fight until the end," she wrote.Read the full post here.
