Any England players banking on the opulence of a five-star hotel similar to the team's lavish Euro 2016 Chantilly base when they land in Russia for the World Cup will be left disappointed after Gareth Southgate opted for slightly more 'modest' accomodation.
Southgate and FA chiefs have identified ForRestMix Club, 45 minutes outside St Petersburg, as their favoured venue.
Although WAGS will be allowed, it seems Southgate has deliberately chosen a quiet location and staff at the hotel have confirmed that Southgate has personally checked out the facilities.
Confirmation that this will be England's base will be forthcoming once England are assured of their place in the tournament. A win tonight at Wembley against Slovenia will seal the deal.
So, just what are England getting? Rooms at the four-star ForRestMix are available for around 7,290 to 14,670 roubles a night - £95 to £192 - and review site TripAdvisor gives the hotel an overall rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The ForRestMix Club does offer a 'spa, luxury hotel and stunning grounds' and but when compared to the £500-a-night Auberge du Jeu de Paume, a few pampered WAG noses may be put out of place- especially when they read some of the mixed TripAdvisor reviews.
- Good location, fair spacy rooms - like transit hotel in Poland for the price of luxery accommodation. Excellent 4 star hotel breakfast, but poor swiming pool with lot of water chemicals, fair sauna and dirty hammam with disgusting steam quality.
- Lovely place for an overnight stay. Clean, extremely spacious rooms (I'd probably make them smaller else they look slightly empty). Very friendly staff. Was surprised by the quality of breakfast, lots of choices, everything was very tasty. Approx 10-15 mins walking time to waterfront.
- This place is perfectly located and for sure has potential. very positive: the staff is really friendly and helpful. Room had a comfortable size and the bathroom seemed to be newly upgraded. Improvements possible: breakfast is simply tasteless - waiting in a line for the one and only coffee machine in the world? Maintenance is below standard....
Southgate is taking a risk by opting for seclusion. It has backfired spectacularly in the past, most recently when Fabio Capello selected the isolated Rustenburg for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the players quickly grew restless.
However, the England manager is banking on the WAGS to keep the players entertained when not training. He said: "I will absolutely encourage the families to come to Russia so that the lads can see them the day after a game.
"I don't think there’s ever been a tournament where every player's entire family has been in with us the whole time. But for some players it will be really important to have them there.
"Sadly, for my family, I am always so focused that I don’t want to be distracted. But for some players that can be hugely important and everyone is different as an individual.
"We want that environment where the players are relaxed. Sometimes it can become a bubble where there's nothing else in your life."
