Emmanuel Macron has warned
Theresa May the fate of
Brexit lies in her hands as he demanded a “political compromise” from Westminster.
The French President said the
European Union has offered as many concessions as it can, suggesting Brussels is no longer willing to budge on the deadlocked Irish border.
He affirmed technical negotiations have gone as far as they can and Brexit requires a political answer.
Mr Macron told reporters in Brussels: “It’s no longer a technical issue, it’s for the political ability of the
UK to reach an agreement that can be presented to us.
“It’s not for the EU to make concessions to deal with UK political issues. I can not be more clear on this.
“Mrs May has been extremely committed and I’m convinced she will work in finding a political solution to get back to the EU negotiators.”
Despite hints from sources within Mr Macron’s government that is preparing to soften his usually tough stance on Brexit to force through a withdrawal agreement, he confirmed there was no opportunity for another shift in EU position.
“There is no additional political compromise on the EU side,” he added.
The refusal to compromise came alongside his usual message that Brexit must come with “consequences”.
Mr Macron joined Angela Merkel and other EU leaders for a drink in Brussels’ historic Grand Place after their Brexit dinner meeting broke up after just two hours.
The French President hinted Theresa May could receive a similar invite if they seal a Brexit deal at another summit.
“I’m always happy and open to share a drink with different leaders, obviously Theresa may will be very much welcome,” he said.
“yesterday she left before the dinner, this is the only explanation for this after dinner drink.
“Don’t worry about that.”
