Armed police rushed towards a vehicle after it crashed into Parliament barriers this morning.
In a video circulating on social media, police were seen rushing to the scene with one officer jumping a barrier towards the car.
The road was cordoned off following the collision on the parliamentary estate.
Police cars swiftly reacted to the incident before the armed police moved towards the vehicle.
Scotland Yard have confirmed that a man has been arrested after a car crashed into the security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament.
London's Metropolitan Police Service tweeted: At 0737hrs today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament.
“The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene.
“A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene.
“We will issue further info when we have it.”
All of Parliament Square has been shut down and helicopters are flying overhead.
A woman is sitting in a foil blanket on the road receiving treatment.
A witness known as Jason said: “Basically I have seen a man driving a vehicle and he has gone into one of the bollards.
“I just straight a way I thought this was another terrorist attack and the police have said ‘get out, get out’.
“I didn’t see anyone else involved, I just saw one vehicle.
“Police seemed to be standing back, they were obviously a bit wary.”
More than 10 police vehicles and at least three ambulances remain outside Parliament.
Firearms officers and at least two police dogs are stationed inside Parliament Square.
Officers have cordoned the whole square off and are asking the public and press to move away from the scene.
The Houses of Parliament are surrounded with security barriers of steel and concrete.
The measures were extended in the wake of the
Westminster Bridge attack in March 2017 when Khalid Masood ploughed a car into crowds on Westminster Bridge, killing four people.
Masood abandoned his car then stabbed and killed unarmed PC Keith Palmer before he was shot by armed police in a courtyard outside Parliament.
