A day after lawyers for
Angelina Jolie asserted in court documents her ex,
Brad Pitt, had not paid any "meaningful" child support, Pitt is swinging back.
USA TODAY has obtained documents filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court by Brad Pitt's attorneys that state the actor has loaned Jolie $8 million for her current Los Angeles residence and has paid over $1.3 million in bills for her and their six children.
In response to Jolie's request for a court hearing over child support, Pitt's lawyer, Lance Spiegel, slams Jolie's filing, calling it "unnecessary, omits material information, and is a thinly veiled effort to manipulate media coverage."
Pitt's team also asserts that Pitt informed Jolie (through their lawyers) around the beginning of August he wanted to move forward with dissolving their marriage, termed legally as bifurcation. Pitt's lawyers state her team asked them to hold for a week, and indicate that Jolie's team decided to file for dissolution, first, on Aug. 7.
Spiegel writes that there was already a status conference with their judge planned for Aug. 21. He calls Jolie's Tuesday request for a meeting specifically about child support "calculated to increase the conflict."
On Tuesday, Jolie's spokesperson Mindy Nyby told USA TODAY that "the aim of Angelina's routine court filing is to provide closure to the marriage in a way that clears a path toward the next stage of their lives and allows her and Brad to recommit as devoted coparents to their children."
USA TODAY has reached out to reps for Pitt and Jolie for comment.
