Bologna has suffered a huge
explosion after video footage of a massive fireball was seen shooting up into the sky near the city's airport in
Italy.
Shock footage uplaoded onto Twitter shows a massive fireball near the airport in northern Italy and plumes of smoke rising into the sky.
Pictures followed at 12.52pm with social media users using the hashtag Bologna to spread the word on online.
The incident happened near the airport, which is also located next to a highway.
Huge clouds of smoke can be seen filtering across part of the road as drivers caught up in the incident sway to dodge smoke and flames.
Firefighters have rushed to the scene and are currently battling the flames on the bypass in
Borgo Panigale, according to local reports.
Ambulance crews and a police helicopter are also in attendance.
Local media reports some people had been injured.
The explosion, whose cause is not yet known, has caused quite a stir on social media.
One Twitter user said: “I was literally looking out my window and suddenly there was a lot of fire in the air.”
Unconfirmed reports say the explosion is the result of a serious vehicle collision.
Witnesses have said a lorry carrying other cars was involved.
Roads around the area have been closed off and currently there are no details of casualties involved.
