Iran cough up an eye-watering $6BILLION in damages for their role in the 9/11
terror attack.
A federal judge ordered
Tehran pay the huge sum after evidence a handful of government entities in the war-torn country were liable for the deaths of 2,996 people in the horror attack.
Judge George B. Daniels blasted the Islamic Republic of Iran, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Central Bank of the Islamic Republic for aiding the terror attack by providing material support to
al Qaeda, ABC News reports.
An attorney acting for the families, Robert Haefele, said: “The evidence presented established that Iran's provision of material support to al-Qaeda was a cause of the 9/11 attacks and the resulting damage, injuries, and deaths.
“It is difficult for those injured or left behind to ignore the findings of the federal court about Iran's culpability.”
He added: “But those findings should not overshadow the mountain of evidence presented against Saudi Arabia, which remains central to the plaintiffs' case.”
The no-nonsense judge ordered the sum of $8.5million per parent, $8.5million per child, $12.5million per spouse and $4.25million per sibling killed in the attack to be paid in the landmark case that could bring some closure to devastated families across the USA.
Survivors and family members sued the Saudi Arabia government in 2003 and claimed employees knowingly assisted plane hijackers and ploughed cash into charities that supported the extremist group.
These claims have been blasted by the Saudi government which vehemently denied any links to the attack.
Brett Eagleson, whose father was killed in the twin towers, said: “The 9/11 families aren't going anywhere.”
The case follows new research that showed first responders to the 9/11 terror attacks are twice as likely to develop blood cancer than the average person.
The horrific results of the study by team of New York-based researchers revealed firefighters first at the scene at the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001 were exposed to unprecedented levels of dust from the collapsed skyscrapers increased their risk of multiple melanoma.
The study, published April 26, said the condition can lead to multiple melanoma, which causes bones to house cancer cells that push out healthy red blood cells.
