OnePlus has confirmed its next flagship
smartphone, OnePlus 6, will include a 3.5mm headphone port.
OnePlus 6 will sport a 3.5mm headphone port, OnePlus’ Carl Pei has confirmed.
The co-founder confirmed the crucial feature during an exclusive chat with technology blog The Verge.
It was unclear whether the Chinese smartphone start-up would include the industry-standard port, or follow in the footsteps of the likes of Apple, HTC, and Google and ditch the connection.
OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei last month tweeted a cryptic reference to the headphone port, leading many to speculate the port would make an appearance on the new phone.
It is now confirmed OnePlus 6 will include the new headphone port.
Elsewhere, Carl Pei confirmed the much-rumoured notch display design will be included in the final product.
Leaked images had previously suggested OnePlus 6 would include a small cut-out in the top of the edge-to-edge display to house the front-facing camera, proximity sensors, and speaker grill.
OnePlus has now confirmed the notch will feature on the final industrial design.
In an exclusive interview with The Verge, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei revealed the next-generation smartphone will feature a notch similar to the iPhone X.
This design will allow OnePlus to stretch the screen across more of the device giving users a larger HD display – squeezed into a handset that’s not physically any bigger than its predecessor.
“How big a notch is always depends on your choices as a company,” Pei told The Verge.
“What you are essentially doing is moving the entire notification bar up, giving users more content on their screen.”
There’s no word on how big the screen will be on the OnePlus 6 but we do know how big this notch will be.
At 19.616mm x 7.687mm “It’ll be bigger than the Essential Phone, smaller than the iPhone,” Pei confirmed.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has previously already confirmed the all-new handset will drop sometime before June 30th 2018.
Lau revealed the latest flagship smartphone will launch late in Q2 2018. The Chinese smartphone start-up’s second financial quarter runs from April 1st to June 30th.
Leaked images purporting to show the OnePlus 6 design appeared to confirm the new handset will use a glass back.
With the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, Apple introduced glass rear panels back into its best-selling smartphone range.
The all-glass design enabled the Cupertino technology company to include wireless charging for the first time.
Following the move to glass on the iPhone, a swathe of other manufacturers have adopted the material in their new handsets.
The Nokia 8 Sirocco, Sony Xperia XZ2, ZTE Blade V9, and Asus Zenfone 5 were all announced last month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tradeshow and all feature glass backs.
LG G7, which was revealed behind-the-scenes at MWC, also looks set to include a glass back.
And now it appears OnePlus will swap its aluminium unibody design in favour of a glass back later this year, too.
The glass back on the OnePlus 6 hints at the possibility for wireless charging on deck.
This is brilliant news for consumers. Since Apple embraced the Qi-standard for wireless charging last year, a swathe of third-party manufacturers have launched wireless charging pads.
These work with a range of devices, from the Samsung Galaxy S9 to the iPhone X.
Should OnePlus adopt the same standard for its new flagship smartphone, then OnePlus 6 owners will be able to use the same accessories as Galaxy and iPhone owners.
That’s likely to a very popular feature amongst customers.
