Indians 6, Diamondbacks 1At Goodyear Ballpark
At the plate: The Diamondbacks did not manage much offensively against Indians RHP Mike Clevinger, who gave up one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven. The only run the Diamondbacks scored on him came on a solo homer off the bat of 2B Camden Duzenack in the sixth inning. Duzenack was a ninth-round pick last year out of Dallas Baptist. The Diamondbacks were held to just three hits on the night.
On the mound: LHP
Patrick Corbin allowed three runs (two earned) in five-plus innings, departing in the sixth after 1B Yonder Alonso led off with a solo home run. “It was good,” Corbin said. “I felt pretty strong throughout. My legs felt good and I was over 90 pitches, so that was great.” LHP T.J. McFarland gave up two runs in an inning but didn’t pitch as poorly as that sounds. He gave up just two singles, with one run scoring on a passed ball, the other on a sacrifice fly on which the runner scored from second base. RHP Yoshihisa Hirano struck out the side in the seventh inning. “It was a great inning,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “The fastball command, the secondary stuff – and he was still facing some of their starters. It was good to see him get out there and execute a game plan.” He had issues with the Goodyear Ballpark mound, just as RHP Archie Bradley did five days earlier. RHP Fernando Salas gave up a run in the eighth inning; it was the first run he had allowed so far in the Cactus League.
Extra bases: LF David Peralta left the game in the middle of the fourth inning with a jammed left hand, Lovullo said. “It’s a situation where if you don’t stay ahead of it, it can linger,” Lovullo said. “I didn’t want that to happen. … He’s not going to miss time. He’s going to be fine.” In the sixth, Indians CF Bradley Zimmer scored from second on what was scored a sac fly to right. Zimmer tagged when RF Chris Owings caught the ball at the warning track and appeared to catch Duzenack, the relay man, by surprise by rounding third and heading home. C Alex Avila committed a passed ball in the same inning that allowed a run to score.
