Russia escalated following the emergence of a new top secret weapon that is able to produce voices in an effort to inject fear into enemies, it has emerged.
Footage from the US Department of Defence shows the new laser in action that is able to manipulate the air to produce sound.
David Law, the leader of the technology research division behind the project stated: "We’re this close to getting it to speak to us. I need three or four more kilohertz."
The technology surely takes the US competition with Russia to a new level - Moscow is understood to be utilising laser technologies under top-secret programmes.
Military analyst Viktor Litovkin commented: “Russian laser systems are integrated into other weapon systems, and are used for target assignment and other combat support functions.
“The Russian systems have not yet developed full-fledged combat independence as demonstrated by their American equivalents.”
Mr Litovkin was eager to describe fundamental flaws of US lasers, hinting that the technology still has many areas to improve in order to be useful in a combat scenario.
He went on: “At the moment, American laser weapons can operate only in clear sunny weather when there is no rain, fog or dust.
“And then add to this the chaos of real combat conditions when the earth is exploding on every side.”
The US’ Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program (JNLWD) is working to achieve a process known as the Laser-Induced Plasma Effect with the new technology that could develop exponentially in the next few years.
Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok declared that a previous laser was tested “three years ago”.
He explained: "The previous laser prototype was tested in the Persian Gulf three years ago aboard an amphibious the USS Ponce.
"Navy commanders were not satisfied with the results of the tests of a 30-kilowatt gun and the project was transferred to another company.”
The weapon displayed is made up of two parts - a femtosecond laser is used to shoot light for 10-15 seconds that rips electrons from air molecules.
The result of this is a ball of plasma that is then hit with a second nanolaser that is tuned to precise wavelengths.
The nano laser is able to harness the plasma to produce light and noise - this creates the voice that could soon be far more coherent.
It is believed that by utilising the Kerr effect, applying small changes in the system’s refractive index, could make it easier for the process to be conducted from longer ranges.
Mr Law added: “Range is a function of the optics. The bigger the mirrors, the farther the range.
“This is the first non-lethal weapon that could go out tens of kilometres.
“One of the things about the ultra short pulse, it wants to form at longer ranges. It’s harder to form at shorter ranges.”
