“You got to give Putin credit. He did win by the most made-up votes."
Late-night hosts took issue with President
Donald Trump calling to congratulate Russian president
Vladimir Putin on his re-election.
On the
Late Show, host
Stephen Colbert noted, “You got to give Putin credit. He did win by the most made-up votes. I believe the final tally was 144 million to everyone else is dead.”
Showing footage from a bi-partisan group of senators being asked by reporters about Trump’s congratulations of Putin, Colbert mimicked their deadpan responses and threw a “smoke bomb” to avoid answering.
Over on
Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host ruminated on the relationship between Trump and his "KGBFF", Putin. "This guy just poisoned two people. Trump is calling to congratulate him," Kimmel quipped.
On TBS, host Conan O'Brien also addressed Trump's call: "Earlier today, President Trump called Vladimir Putin to congratulate him on his presidential win," O'Brien said during his monologue. "Coincidentally, Trump made the same call to Putin on November 9th, 2016."
O'Brien went on to break down his joke for the audience. "I like that's not one people laugh at," he commented. "You could see everyone doing the math and going, yes, it lines up, it's not very funny, but he's doing the work."
