BETWEEN three and five people have died and more than 100 others have been left injured after a commuter train derailed in the suburbs of Milan this morning.

The train, which was full of commuters, derailed between Treviglio and Pioltello on the outskirts of the Italian city at around 7am this morning.
At least five of the injured are said to be in a serious condition and some passengers are believed to be trapped in the wreckage.
Emergency services are at the scene and the cause of the incident remains unknown.
A spokesman for state-owned train firm Ferrovie dello Stato confirmed that an accident had occurred in Pioltello, around 40km from central Milan.

Pictures from the scene show crumpled carriages while others show what appears to be blood on the side of the train.
Firefighters can also be seen trying to free people from the wreckage.
