THR's Scott Feinberg will moderate the festival's tribute to the 'I, Tonya' co-stars.
Margot Robbie and Allison Janney, the stars of Craig Gillespie's acclaimed dramedy I, Tonya (on which Robbie also served as a producer), have been tapped to share the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the 2018 Santa Barbara International Film Festival, the fest announced Friday. It's only the third time this award will be shared.
The ceremony, which I will moderate, will take place at Santa Barbara's historic Arlington Theatre on Feb. 8 as part of the SBIFF's 33rd edition. The fest will run as scheduled, Jan. 31 through Feb. 10, despite the deadly mudslides that recently afflicted Montecito.
For their respective performances as figure skater Tonya Harding and her no-nonsense mother, LaVona Golden, Robbie and Janney already have received Golden Globe, Critics' Choice, Screen Actors Guild and BAFTA nominations — Robbie in the lead actress category and Janney in the supporting actress category. Janney won the Golden Globe and Critics' Choice awards, and Robbie won the Critics' Choice prize for best actress in a comedy; the SAG and BAFTA awards are pending.
"Allison and Margot bring biting humor and an emotional resonance to their real-life characters in I, Tonya," SBIFF executive director Roger Durling said in a statement. "We are proud to celebrate them and their incredible contributions to cinema."
The fest's previous outstanding performer recipients include Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (2017), Brie Larson and Saoirse Ronan (2016), Steve Carell (2015), Cate Blanchett (2014), Jennifer Lawrence (2013), Viola Davis (2012), James Franco (2011), Colin Firth (2010), Penelope Cruz (2009), Angelina Jolie (2008), Helen Mirren (2007), Heath Ledger (2006), Kate Winslet (2005) and Charlize Theron (2004).
In December, the festival honored Victoria & Abdul lead actress Judi Dench with its Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film and has announced other honors for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri supporting actor Sam Rockwell, Lady Bird lead actress Ronan, Darkest Hour lead actor Gary Oldman, The Florida Project supporting actor Willem Dafoe, Mudbound supporting actress-songwriter Mary J. Blige, Detroit supporting actor John Boyega, Call Me by Your Name lead actor Timothee Chalamet, Downsizing supporting actress Hong Chau, Wonder Woman lead actress Gal Gadot, Get Out lead actor Daniel Kaluuya and The Big Sick lead actor-co-writer Kumail Nanjiani.
