A big decision - Lucy Staniforth makes Aston Villa transfer admission after Manchester United exit
England midfielder Lucy Staniforth admits it was a 'big decision' to leave Manchester United in January to join Aston Villa, but says it was the right time to move on. The 30-year-old previously represented local rivals Birmingham City between 2018 and 2020 before she joined United. After a promising start to life further north, game time became limited and Staniforth was in need of regular minutes. She joined fellow England international Jordan Nobbs through the door in January and both midfielders helped guide Villa to their highest ever finish in the Women's Super League last summer. However, having settled in Manchester, moving to another club mid-season was no easy decision. "I live in Manchester. We were doing well. Albeit, I wasn't playing as much so obviously that was one of my motivations. “But, I think yeah, it's really difficult when you take into consideration everything away from the pitch, you know, your family life, your living situation. It's not as easy as just getting up and leaving. "There are so many factors, I guess that go into a move and it's not always just about playing but I think at that age it was the right time. And obviously Manchester United had a wonderful season so that was really great to watch from afar.” Villa landed a fifth-place finish in the table and reached the FA Cup semi-finals before they ultimately fell short against eventual winners Chelsea. The club's recruitment under Ward has been shrewd, highlighted by the arrivals of Staniforth and Nobbs in the January window and the arrivals of Rachel Daly and Kenza Dali last summer. The club are in a positive place but Staniforth insists they must keep building to close in on the usual top four teams. "I think it's testament to the club," she continued. "When you look at the season that we had last year, and we've managed to retain pretty much every key player for us and everyone's in a really good place. We're satisfied with last year but I think the overriding feeling is we want to bridge that gap even more and retain where we finished in the league, if not better. "I just don't I hope that we don't sort of rest on what we did last year and expect that to be good enough this year, because we've got to go again, everyone gets better and we've just got to make sure we keep doing that too." Staniforth's career progressed even further this week after being called up to the England squad as a standby for the World Cup, replacing an injured Jess Park who will be going back to Manchester City for treatment on a shoulder injury. Lucy Staniforth was talking at the launch of the Northwest Football Awards 2023 - entries and nominations are now open for deserved winners from the Northwest footballing community.
