Residents in a Grimsby-area village have been left 'frustrated' after a
fire in a 'stolen wheelie bin' burnt down a hedgerow on a playing field. Those living near to Butt Lane, in Laceby, described scenes of flames coming from a bin near to the bowling green, before it spread to the hedges next to it. Part of the trees have been completely destroyed by the act of vandalism with members of the Community Collective left wondering what to do. Mike Hall is part of the team who have recently taken ownership of the land and feels as though this is a 'kick in the teeth' to those trying to make a difference. Humberside
police have also launched an investigation into the incident which happened last Saturday (May 13) at 11.45pm. Read more: More than half a tonne of illicit cigarettes and tobacco sent to the incinerator in the Grimsby area Mike said: "I was made aware of the fire around midnight on Saturday and was told that a wheelie bin had been stolen and taken onto the field before being set alight. Apparently, the fire had spread to the hedge behind it and burnt a number of trees." However, this isn't the first time something like this has happened. He added: "We had a similar incident like this last year when a bench was set on fire, which I saw when I was walking home. It's so disheartening, we're trying to put some work into the area, but things like this stop you from being able to do it, it's a real kick in the teeth" The Laceby Community Collective have just signed a 125-year lease for the playing fields on Butt Lane and are hoping to improve the old pavilion and provide a place for younger generations to enjoy. "Although this is bad, it proves that what we're trying to create is needed around here," said Mike. We hope to get CCTV cameras in the future to stop this from happening again. We also have problems with mopeds riding on there, but for the most part, people respect it." The current pavilion has been on the fields for a number of years and remains untouched. Mike believes the building has fallen into 'disrepair' and hopes he and the others can bring it back to life. He said: "We're changing what we can to bring it up to date. The village looks lovely, but that's just an eyesore. However, events like this put a dent in everything. "I do also worry about whether or not this will happen again. However, if we can get people to respect the site as early as possible, it won't be an issue. At the minute, there is nothing in the village and I just hope what we're trying to do can give a boost to everyone in Laceby."
