Eurovisions Bucks Fizz star Jay Aston predicts 2023 winner and its not the UK
Bucks Fizz's Jay Aston has given her verdict on who will win this year's Eurovision Song Contest - and it isn't the UK. The singer, 62, won the international competition back in 1981 with the pop group and their hit Making Your Mind Up. Yet Jay has a firm favourite, who isn't the UK's entry Mae Muller . The 80s star believes Sweden is in for the top spot at this year's competition taking place in Liverpool. “Sweden is the favourite and should remain so. For me, that’s the one that stands out because she’s done it before - Loreen, the Swedish entry," Jay explained. "She is the favourite and I think for good reason because there is just a confidence about her performance because she’s won it before and it's very rare that you go back and win it again – I don’t think anyone has ever done that other than Johnny Logan." Ireland's Eurovision act slams song contest in scathing post after failing to qualify Bucks Fizz won the competition back in 1981 ( Image: BBC Television) Jay added: "It’s the confidence and there is a similarity in the song that she did before which was a winner. There is a change in the music this year – there is just a slight shift, with a few dark horses – but I think Loreen really has got it. “Other songs which are getting a lot of profile is Spain, France, and Norway, but I don’t think they’re actually as strong as they have been in previous years. "I think Mae Muller will do really well on the night, I’m sure she’ll at least be in the running – fourth or fifth," she told Sky Bingo . The UK is currently hosting this year's event after Ukraine won the competition last year. The war-torn country was ruled out as being able to host the event, and so Liverpool was chosen. Her upbeat Eurovision banger I Wrote A Song is actually a diss track, which tells a story of an ex-boyfriend. "I was really annoyed at this guy. I wanted to do something crazy, maybe burn his house down, I don't know," Mae told followers on TikTok, In terms of her chances of winning the contest on Saturday, the star has odds of 33/1. Heading into the live shows, the bookies' frontrunner is the same as Jay Aston's. Her winning track “Euphoria” remains one of the most popular Eurovision songs of all time. However, following her performance yesterday, Loreen has had her odds cut to 8/15. With odds of 5/2, Finland could spring a surprise or there's a 17/2 shot that Ukraine makes it back-to-back successes. The final will be taking place this weekend on Saturday night. Raye review – a triumphant act of independence and naked ambition
Sep 27, 2023
Royal Albert Hall, LondonBacked by the Heritage Orchestra, Raye’s hard-fought songs have extra drama, especially when, with radical vulnerability, she sings in her underwear‘No string section, no tiny violin,” goes Raye’s Oscar Winning Tears. She glances over her shoulder and behind her, in a divine sense of irony, is the entire Heritage Orchestra. For one night only at the Royal Albert Hall, the dreams of Rachel Keen are reclaimed in glorious Technicolor: a live, recorded performance of her debut album My 21st Century Blues on a scale befitting the vision she has fought for almost a decade to execute. Having been cuffed to Polydor for seven years, who allowed her (now Mercury-nominated) record to stagnate while they doled out her talents for daiquiri-syrup dance hits, tonight’s operatic reimagining is a triumphant statement of independence. It makes for an incredible collision of worlds: the orchestra bleeds into Raye’s south London DNA, bringing the inherent drama of her music into sharp relief. Fortified by the thrill of strings and an entire choir, the hypnotic dance track Black Mascara reaches biblical levels of retribution. In an album laced with trauma, this musical heft matches the weight of its emotion. Mary Jane, a stripped-back confessional that grapples with addiction, is now replete with lavish saxophone solos and guitar riffs. Raye makes no attempt to hide her enchantment, waving her arms as if conducting the symphony herself, relishing every twist and turn. Punctuated with costume changes from one timeless gown to another, it feels like the realisation of a childhood fantasy. Continue reading...
