All of the winning candidates in Cambridge have now been announced, and sees Labour continue as the majority party with 27 councillors. Councillor Anna Smith said the result was the party's second best ever and that some "absolutely phenomenal councillors" had been elected. The party did come close to losing one of its seats in Cherry Hinton as the Conservative candidate came within 100 votes of Labour's Councillor Robert Dryden. Cllr Smith said: "First of all Rob is an amazing councillor and I think his track record is absolutely vital in that. "Clearly we are hearing messages from some of the voters Cherry Hinton and we have to listen to them, we have to take those seriously. I will be talking with the local councillors over the next few days to get a sense of what those messages were on the doorstep. But the other thing to say is the Torys threw everything at that ward and they were still unable to break through and I think that says a lot about the Torys in Cambridge , that they can throw all that at it and they do not break through." Councillor Tim Bick, leader of the Liberal Democrat group, said he felt "pretty good" about the result and that it made the Liberal Democrats a "stronger opposition". He said the party had "plenty to work on" and said they would be looking at how to improve in the areas where they had "near misses". Cllr Bick said his group had also taken away the message from voters about the proposed congestion charge. He said: "Obviously this has been an issue on the doorstep for all of us. The candidates from my party have come away understanding the need to change the proposals to make them fair and workable, but still try to solve the transport problem. "I think the election has been helpful having the public debate, people had a lot of conversations on the doorstep with us and we aim to honor their trust and try and make those changes are very important, fairness and workability are things that are integral to peoples lives and are really vital." The day was also celebrated by the Green Party, which held on to the Abbey seat with Elliot Tong taking over from former councillor Hannah Copley, and the party gained a new seat in Newnham, with Jean Glasberg winning the seat. Leader of the group, Councillor Naomi Bennett said the campaign had been "really lovely" and said: "We work hard to get seats when we get them, we work hard to keep them." The Conservatives did not win any seats, but came close in Cherry Hinton, under 100 votes behind the winning Labour candidate. Zachary Marsh, who stood for the Conservatives in Cherry Hinton, said he felt the party had achieved its aim of sending a message to the other parties about the congestion charge, even without winning the seats. He said: " The key thing in the campaign was engaging with voters listening to their anxiety about the congestion charge. People who do not normally vote Conservative are backing us this time to send a message to the people in charge that they feel ignored and want to have their say and want this policy gone. I am delighted to give people that choice in this election." Raye review – a triumphant act of independence and naked ambition
Sep 27, 2023
Royal Albert Hall, LondonBacked by the Heritage Orchestra, Raye’s hard-fought songs have extra drama, especially when, with radical vulnerability, she sings in her underwear‘No string section, no tiny violin,” goes Raye’s Oscar Winning Tears. She glances over her shoulder and behind her, in a divine sense of irony, is the entire Heritage Orchestra. For one night only at the Royal Albert Hall, the dreams of Rachel Keen are reclaimed in glorious Technicolor: a live, recorded performance of her debut album My 21st Century Blues on a scale befitting the vision she has fought for almost a decade to execute. Having been cuffed to Polydor for seven years, who allowed her (now Mercury-nominated) record to stagnate while they doled out her talents for daiquiri-syrup dance hits, tonight’s operatic reimagining is a triumphant statement of independence. It makes for an incredible collision of worlds: the orchestra bleeds into Raye’s south London DNA, bringing the inherent drama of her music into sharp relief. Fortified by the thrill of strings and an entire choir, the hypnotic dance track Black Mascara reaches biblical levels of retribution. In an album laced with trauma, this musical heft matches the weight of its emotion. Mary Jane, a stripped-back confessional that grapples with addiction, is now replete with lavish saxophone solos and guitar riffs. Raye makes no attempt to hide her enchantment, waving her arms as if conducting the symphony herself, relishing every twist and turn. Punctuated with costume changes from one timeless gown to another, it feels like the realisation of a childhood fantasy. Continue reading...
