And today, she’ll be singing it in front of a 60,000 home crowd in Glasgow before Celtic play Rangers in an all important derby at Celtic Park. The Cambridge singer, 24, isn’t even a Football fan but will be playing her biggest ever gig before the kick-off after becoming a viral sensation. I just want to do everyone justice. “It’s just going to be me and my guitar. Who needs a drum kit when you’ve got 60,000 backing singers.” It’s an incredible turn of events for the indie Singer who knows nothing about Celtic and also had never heard of Portuguese footballer Jota, 24 until she was asked to choose a song on Patrick Kielty’s BBC 5Live show. On the show for his 5Live Lounge section he asks musicians to put their own spin on well-known football chants. Fans send them in and Ellie chose Jota on the Wing which celebrates the winger to the 2003 tune of Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone. Jota celebrates Jota joined Celtic in September 2021 and finished the season last year with 13 goals and 14 assists. An instant fan favourite Celtic fans came up with the chant: “When you score, you make the Celtic sing, Jota on the wing, Jota Jota on the wing, Every time you’re on the ball we know, There’s gonna be a goal”. Unsurprisingly, the club signed him up from Benfica on a five year deal. Ellie admitted: “It’s such an unlikely connection. I’m not a football fan and hadn’t even heard of Celtic. “But I really liked the chant a Celtic fan had sent in, so I played it, had a really nice time and didn’t think anymore of it. But when I opened Twitter that evening it had exploded and had been posted over montages of Jota scoring goals.” Fans pleaded with Ellie, who has had viral success of TikTok before and is signed to major label Decca, to record a proper version which she did posting it on her socials. Ellie is hoping they’ll meet today. She might even get his jersey. She’ll certainly be wearing the Hoops when she performs. She said: “It depends on how the match goes but potentially hopefully we’ll meet. He sent a really nice private message on Instagram saying thanks for the song and it felt really special. “It’s really lovely to see how much the fans love him to come up with a song supporting him and it’s lovely for me to play a small part in that.” When it’s revealed Sir Rod Stewart is a big Celtic fan and may be at the game and given his love of the club could even get her on stage when he plays Edinburgh Castle in July she laughed: “I’d be happy with that.” Ellie wants to wear a Celtic strip to perform her viral hit Today’s game won’t have Rangers fans, after the clubs decided there were too many concerns over security because the hosts are nine points in the lead and Rangers need a win to keep the title race alive and stop their rivals clinching two-in-a-row. Ellie didn’t know about the bitter rivalry between the clubs and hasn’t had any Rangers trolling. She said: “There’s always the odd thing on the internet but I try and avoid any negativity because you can't really spend any time on the internet without someone not liking something but it has been overwhelmingly positive which is really nice, especially as it’s a world I didn’t know much about. “The Celtic fans have been super welcoming.” Ellie with Scots Rapper Bemz recording a special duet of the viral hit for SkySports Ellie travelled up to Scotland earlier this week. And as well as preparing for today’s Celtic Park performance she also teamed up with Glasgow rapper Bemz for a “fun” joint performance of Jota on the Wing for SkySports which will air on the channel ahead of today’s game. It follows the success of the TikTok duet shared by Bemz, using Ellie’ cover which also went viral. The singer and multi-instrumentalist still can’t quite believe how Jota on the Wing has changed her life. She was already building a fanbase on TikTok with viral hits including a take on Britney Spears’ Toxic and getting over 6m views for a video where she harmonised Abba’s Dancing Queen. Ellie opened on tour for Eurovision’s Sam Ryder and has become a favourite on Radio 1 and 2. Today’s gig at Celtic Park is only the second ever time she’s been in Scotland. She played Glasgow SWG3 - her first time in Scotland - during her tour last year. Ellie said: “It was one of my favourite shows on my tour last year. Today will definitely be the biggest crowd I’ve played by quite a way. “Everyone has been telling me how amazing the energy is in the stadium. I can’t way to feel it and get a taste for what it’s like. It’s not something I’ve done before.” Read More Related Articles What channel is Celtic vs Rangers? Live stream, kick-off and TV details for Premiership clash Next month Ellie goes on tour but as yet doesn’t have a Scottish date - but is trying to find a date and if not will definitely be back now she’s become a favourite to many up here. She will soundcheck this morning and is looking forward to bringing everyone together. She’s also trying to work out if she can record the song - but is finding it difficult to find out who has copyright. She said: “We are looking into it but it looks quite complicated because we don’t own any part of the song. With the success of Jota on the Wing she’s also up for singing Scotland’s Euro 24 or World Cup 2026 song if we make it to both or either event. World Cup song if we manage to get to Euro to North American in 2026. But Ellie is game to perform a new one if the Tartan Army come up with the lyrics like Jota on the Wing. She said: “That would be amazing. Fans could write the song and I can put it to music and sing it. I’d love that.” * Ellie’s new EP In Case of Emergency is out on June 9 via Decca. Story Saved You can find this story in My Bookmarks. Raye review – a triumphant act of independence and naked ambition
Sep 27, 2023
Royal Albert Hall, LondonBacked by the Heritage Orchestra, Raye’s hard-fought songs have extra drama, especially when, with radical vulnerability, she sings in her underwear‘No string section, no tiny violin,” goes Raye’s Oscar Winning Tears. She glances over her shoulder and behind her, in a divine sense of irony, is the entire Heritage Orchestra. For one night only at the Royal Albert Hall, the dreams of Rachel Keen are reclaimed in glorious Technicolor: a live, recorded performance of her debut album My 21st Century Blues on a scale befitting the vision she has fought for almost a decade to execute. Having been cuffed to Polydor for seven years, who allowed her (now Mercury-nominated) record to stagnate while they doled out her talents for daiquiri-syrup dance hits, tonight’s operatic reimagining is a triumphant statement of independence. It makes for an incredible collision of worlds: the orchestra bleeds into Raye’s south London DNA, bringing the inherent drama of her music into sharp relief. Fortified by the thrill of strings and an entire choir, the hypnotic dance track Black Mascara reaches biblical levels of retribution. In an album laced with trauma, this musical heft matches the weight of its emotion. Mary Jane, a stripped-back confessional that grapples with addiction, is now replete with lavish saxophone solos and guitar riffs. Raye makes no attempt to hide her enchantment, waving her arms as if conducting the symphony herself, relishing every twist and turn. Punctuated with costume changes from one timeless gown to another, it feels like the realisation of a childhood fantasy. Continue reading...
