A man believes taking over a dance hall helped save his life after two sudden heart attacks. Paul Hutchinson runs the SuPa Dance studio with partner Sue in Grant Street, Cleethorpes , and, after years of working for himself, he decided to take over the former auction house and opened it up to various community groups. From dancing to drama classes, Paul tries to help anyone he can, even offering office space for those who need it. The studio has also been essential in helping Paul as much as it has the groups who use it. Over the course of eight years, Paul had two heart attacks that prompted him to change his lifestyle. cancer diagnosis He said: "I used to have my own business in the early maughties and then in 2016 I decided to take on the dance hall. As soon as we opened I started to really enjoy it. We're a space for all members of the community to enjoy, from dance rehearsals to theatre groups. "I love to see people coming and using the hall and it gives me a sense of pride when you see people enjoying it. Aside from what it would normally be used for, we're also hoping to turn it into a warm space in time to help people who are struggling." For Paul, it's the people that make it all worthwhile though. "Seeing everyone get together in our space and watching them create their own little community is just wonderful. We have people up to the age of 80 coming to learn tap dancing here and watching them is unreal." However, it hasn't been easy. Paul has suffered from a number of medical conditions as well as battling Covid and the cost of living crisis. "Things were really tough after Covid and the cost of living crisis has just made everything even harder. Paul hopes to help as many people in the community as he possibly can with the dance hall on Grant Street in Cleethorpes (Image: Grimsby Live) "It's hard to keep things going, but taking on the dance hall was equally as important for my health as it was for making a living." After two major heart attacks in his mid-40s and early 50s, Paul knew he had to step away from being so invested in his work and looked for something he could oversee rather than manage. "I thought this was a great way for us to make a living and to help with my health. Doing this has come as a relief to me, work was my priority, and that needed to change. The dance hall has given me a completely different outlook on life now." He added: "In the future, we'd love to have it full all the time and have as many groups in as possible. To help as many people in the community as we can is our dream really."
