New Windows PC block could prove costly for millions of Microsoft users
There's more bad news for some Windows users and it could finally convince many that they need to splash out and buy a brand-new PC. Despite Microsoft now ending all support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 it remains more popular than you might imagine with it thought these operating systems are still installed on millions of devices across the globe. However, a much-loved service has just confirmed that it will stop supporting these Microsoft platforms early next year and it could finally force many to part ways with their old PCs. Gaming service Steam has confirmed plans to block Windows 7 and Windows 8 systems from January 2024 which means those currently enjoying thousands of blockbuster titles will instantly lose access. Apple confirms 'biggest and most exciting' event yet with major updates coming to your iPhone, iPad and MacBook The only way to carry on playing games via Steam is to switch to Windows 10 or make the move over to Windows 11 and both come with their problems. Microsoft no longer sells copies of Windows 10 so if you can find a version from other stores Windows 11 is the only option. Some Windows users have been blocked from the Fortnite app ( Image: MICROSOFT • GETTY) Although that may sound like the perfect solution, this newest OS isn't compatible with many older laptops and that means a trip to the shops to buy something new. Those enjoying Steam on Windows 7 and Windows 8 have a few months to make the changes with the block coming into force from January 1, 2024. UK's 'worst' broadband uncovered - is your internet provider on the list? Explaining more about its decision, Steam said: "As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows. "This change is required as core features in Steam rely on an embedded version of Google Chrome, which no longer functions on older versions of Windows. In addition, future versions of Steam will require Windows feature and security updates only present in Windows 10 and above." Along with losing Steam, there are more reasons why users should consider scrapping their old operating system. Because Microsoft no longer supports this software it won't receive any bug fixes or new upgrades and that could leave users open to attack from hackers. Explaining more about the issues of not upgrading, Microsoft said: "While you could continue to use a PC running Windows 8.1, without continued software and security updates, your PC will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. We recommend upgrading to a version of Windows that is still supported. A new device that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and a great experience." This latest block comes after Windows 8 and Windows 7 users were also recently blocked from playing Fortnite. Announcing the news via Twitter , Epic Games said: "As previously announced, starting with Battle Royale Chapter 4 Season 2, players will be required to use Windows 10 or higher in order to continue playing Fortnite natively on PC in an officially supported manner."
