Scunthorpe United manager Jimmy Dean reflected on his side’s draw away at York City, conceding that the task of staying in the National League is looking increasingly difficult. The Iron are six points behind Gateshead United who sit just outside the relegation, but the latter also have three games in hand on Dean’s side, which means results like the one on Tuesday night are no longer good enough in their desperate fight for survival. Scunthorpe created more than enough chances to win the game against York but ultimately came up short, but their manager still came out and praised his side’s efforts despite the result. The ball just wouldn’t go in again, particularly in the first half where we had the one-on-one with Richie [Bennett]. In normal circumstances, it would be a really good point and a clean sheet after Saturday’s performance. We were resilient but looking at how results have gone we needed more. “I thought they put their bodies on the line and the defending was outstanding. I thought we had a bad first ten minutes but we got into it. The last half an hour of the first half we dominated but we didn’t get the goal we deserved. Second half they changed their shape which shows how well we were doing.” With just six games left for Scunthorpe to pull themselves to safety, every game from this point is near enough a must-win, especially on Saturday when they welcome Torquay United to Glanford Park on Saturday, with their next opponents just one place above them on the same number of points. Dean added: “It’s getting difficult now and we know it is. We can only fight while we can. In isolation, it’s a good point away from home, but unfortunately, results have gone against us. We have to go for Saturday and it’s a must-win. It’s unbelievable support [from the fans]. We have to win. Torquay will be buoyant because they’ve got a win at Boreham Wood so it’s a must win.”
