More than 25 play parks in North East Lincolnshire are to get makeovers in the next 18 months. North East Lincolnshire Council is investing £800,000 in repairs and improvements to 28 play parks across the borough, including the People's Park, the Duke of York Gardens and Nunsthorpe Recreational Ground. About £200,000 is going towards repairs at 23 play parks to reduce the risk of accidents. Just over £560,000 will go towards paying for new equipment. This will include picnic tables, accessible swings and roundabouts, and teqball – a football-based game played on a curved table. Plans to refurbish and upgrade the play parks were signed off by the council's cabinet in June 2021, with works expected to take three years from then. Since then, the council has consulted with the public for what improvements people would like to see in individual play areas and carried out a procurement process for the contractors. Cllr Stewart Swinburn, portfolio holder for environment and transport, said: "Most people love their local parks and play areas and we are working hard to improve them so more children can enjoy playing outdoors. We want more children to have the facilities where they can be safe, active and enjoy playing outdoors. "It’s more than 10 years since we’ve seen this level of investment in our play parks and I’m looking forward to seeing the works get underway soon." Playparks set to have repairs and new equipment include: Ainslie Street Albion Street Alden Close Bradley Woods Butt Lane Capes Recreation Ground Carver Road Duke of York Gardens Grant Thorold Park Haverstoe Park Kingston Gardens Mount Pleasant Musical Garden, King’s Road Neville Turner Way Nunsthorpe Recreation Ground People’s Park Pilgrims Mount Quantock Park Rose & Crown School Walk Sidney Park Sixhills Street Sussex Rec St Christopher’s Playing Field Sussex Recreation Ground Sutherland Park Weelsby Woods Wingate Parade The new equipment will vary by location. The People's Park will have a disabled swing, "pod fit", three picnic tables, a three-seater "blazer" and two teqballs. Sidney Park's play area can look forward to a disabled roundabout, two picnic tables, a spinning bowl, blaze rocker, a large steel slide and one teqball. When the improvements are completed, 13 teqballs will be installed across various play areas and 29 new picnic tables. Confirmation of the planned improvements to the play parks follows on from a remarkable fundraising campaign last year by a seven-year-old Immingham girl, Elysia Nicolaou , to get a climbing frame reinstalled at Pilgrim Park. Her favourite climbing frame was destroyed by arsonists. Through various activities with her school
Friends, Elysia raised more than £2,500 by August 2022. Last November, the council installed a new multi-play kit, complete with a climbing net, climbing bars and even a firefighter's pole.
