A Humberston couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary say the secret to a long and successful marriage is teamwork, looking out for one another, and getting out of the house every day. Ken and Janet Ottley, 82 and 79 respectively, first met on a Saturday night in 1962 outside Cleethorpes Pier. They married the following year on a cold March day at St Peter's Church in Cleethorpes . In the years that followed, they welcomed two daughters, Karen in 1967 and Deborah in 1971. Now proud and doting grandparents to their four grandchildren - Aimee, 23, Lora, 21, Brennan, 18, and Jamie, 13 - the pair say the last six decades of marriage have "flown by". For some reason, the pier was closed that night and I went with my pal down there and, at some stage during the evening, we saw Janet with her friend, Dawn, outside, and went to the Gaiety, the only other place that was open. "Somewhere along the line I must have thought, 'She's a bit of alright', so we offered them a lift home. When we got back to Janet's house, I asked her if she wanted to go out the following day and we went to Dog and Rat pub in Broughton. From there, we were going out with each other." We weren't going out very long, only about six months, when he proposed to me, and we got married the next year. "Our wedding day was lovely, at St Peter's Church in Cleethorpes. It was very cold, in March. It was a sunny day but very blowy, my veil was going right up. There was a bit of
SNOW in the morning, but it was a lovely bright sunny day. It was a small occasion but we had plenty of
Friends there. We had cake and wine at the memorial hall afterwards." Over the years, Ken and Janet have enjoyed many holidays abroad together, even paying an unexpected visit to
Russia once. Celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2013 (Image: Submitted) Janet said: "Our daughter was a flight attendant so we visited lots of places, we used to stay with the crew. We've seen a few places. Once, Deborah asked us if we fancied going to Russia and we said, 'Oh, go on then'. "Then Deborah and her husband Phillip were based in Dubai, so we visited them for a fortnight. That was very nice. We do feel as if we've seen a lot of places. We've been to
New York and have been to Majorca so many times we can't even remember." Since the pandemic, Janet and Ken have been unable to travel abroad - but still make sure they go somewhere every day and spend precious time with their family. "We usually see the family at the weekend, and we do make a point of going out every day somewhere, usually to a café. We go out every day. We like being in the garden too," Janet said. When asked how it feels to be celebrating 60 years of marriage, Ken joked: "It feels like it's been twice as long. Janet puts up with me. When you're in normal married life you just enjoy being with each other," he added. Ken and Janet are still happier than ever (Image: Submitted) Janet added: "It has gone quickly. You can't believe that it's been 60 years. You think, 'No, it can't have been', but it has flown. Ken is very caring, he does look after me." Asked about their secret to a long and happy marriage, the couple said: "Teamwork and looking after each other. We look out for each other, and we work together."
