Magnus Carlsen expects to start back on the winning trail on Saturday when Norway’s world champion aims for yet another first prize at Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee in the Netherlands, the “chess Wimbledon”. The 30-year-old’s record to date in chess’s most prestigious and competitive annual invitation stands at seven first prizes and three second places in 13 attempts.
Round one starts at 1pm on Saturday, with rest days on 20, 25 and 28 January before the final round on 31 January. Live commentary will be available on major chess sites.
