The new series of Spitting Image debuted last week, with
Boris Johnson and his cabinet members,
Donald Trump,
Lewis Hamilton and Greta Thunberg among the public figures parodied in the revival.
However, as one of its new impressionists has revealed, not all of the characters are coming so easily.
During an appearance on the
BBC podcast Newcast, comedian Matt Forde confirmed that he’s voicing
Labour leader Keir Starmer in the new series, but admits he’s “a bit harder to do” than some of his political peers in the Conservative government.
“He is a bit harder to do than people like Boris and Trump,” Matt explained. “Because he is almost deliberately set against their style and their whole philosophy. So they’re big and bold and ludicrous, and he’s very single-mindedly professional.”The difficulty of doing Keir Starmer - @MattForde is the comedian charged with doing just that for the Spitting Image reboothttps://t.co/elHmTUGZKW | @BBCSoundspic.twitter.com/jnta14Q1Ew— BBC Radio 4 (@BBCRadio4) October 7, 2020Matt added that to deliver his best impression of Starmer, he needs to act like there’s “a slight blockage in his nose somewhere, not a full nose block”.
At the request of the BBC’s political editor Laura Kuenssberg and political correspondent Chris Mason, he then performed a line in character, saying: “I’m a constructive leader of the opposition, BUT.”Co-creator Roger Law recently said he was keen to make sure the show took shots at figures on all sides of the political spectrum, insisting there is “lots of ammunition to throw at the other side” too, although he did add that he finds the ideology of Boris Johnson’s government “nuts”.Keir Starmer #SpittingImagepic.twitter.com/Aa0SEm8if5— Spitting Image (@SpittingImage) October 1, 2020The Spitting Image reboot debuted on the streaming platform BritBox last week, with new episodes coming every Friday.
