Hate crimes: How they affect BIPOC and why they are on the rise | Just the FAQs
Hate crimes are on the rise against communities of color. In 2019, they reached their highest level in more than a decade. Here’s why.
RELATED: https://bit.ly/3uw8mD5
A series of violent crimes against Asians and Asian Americans has prompted activists and experts to warn that racist rhetoric about the coronavirus pandemic may be fueling a rise in hate incidents.
Police in Oakland, California, announced this week that they arrested a suspect in connection with a brutal attack of a 91-year-old man in Chinatown that was caught on camera. In less than a week, a Thai man was attacked and killed in San Francisco, a Vietnamese woman was assaulted and robbed of $1,000 in San Jose, and a Filipino man was attacked with a box cutter on the subway in New York City.
It's unclear whether the crimes were racially motivated, but advocates calling for more to be done to address violence against Asian Americans say racist crimes against the community are historically underreported for a variety of reasons.

Biden's relationship with Vilsack goes back decades.

Senators question law enforcement officials about Capitol riots | USA TODAY
The current and former leaders of four law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting the U.S. Capitol face questioning from senators Tuesday in their first public testimony about the deadly Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
The hearing before two Senate committees comes as lawmakers investigate the buildup to the riots and the subsequent response by law enforcement. Thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump marched to the Capitol Jan. 6, overpowered police officers, broke inside and then ransacked the building in a riot that resulted in five deaths.

Pres. Joe Biden delivers remarks in memory of 500k lost to COVID-19 | USA TODAY
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris hold a moment of silence and candle lighting ceremony for the 500,000 Americans dead from COVID-19.
RELATED: https://youtu.be/vfofxqwvxY8
The U.S. once again crossed a somber COVID threshold much faster than any country in the world.
Less than a year after the coronavirus outbreak was declared a pandemic, the U.S. recorded its 500,000th death Monday, according to the Johns Hopkins University dashboard. That’s more than twice the COVID-19 fatalities registered in Brazil, which ranks second on the list.
President Joe Biden will hold a moment of silence and a candle-lighting service Monday evening at the White House to mark the enormous loss of life.
The endless hours of toiling amid death and suffering have taken a heavy toll on health care workers, who are exhausted and frustrated with those who won’t follow public health guidelines aimed at curbing transmission of the virus.

Washington National Cathedral rings bells to mark 500k lives lost to COVID | USA TODAY
The Washington National Cathedral will toll its funeral bell to honor the 500,000 people who have died of COVID-19 in the U.S.
RELATED: https://youtu.be/lonBLx0D6XI
Over 90,000 more Americans are likely to die from COVID-19-related causes by June 1, a leading forecasting institute says. The projection comes as the U.S. expects to surpass 500,000 deaths within the next two days.
When the pandemic will end remains a mystery. Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's "possible" that Americans will still be wearing masks in 2022. Marty Makary, who teaches at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, doesn't see it that way.
"At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life," Makary says in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.
Meanwhile, the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the group that forecasts all those additional deaths, also warns that the world may never reach herd immunity.
IHME projects that 589,197 Americans will have died by the end of May. The good news is the institute projects that deaths could drop to fewer than 500 per day by then, and the number could be even lower if Americans are vigilant about wearing masks. The U.S. is currently averaging about 2,000 deaths per day.
"While it's possible to reach herd immunity by next winter, it seems increasingly unlikely we will do so, and in light of that we all need to shift our expectations," IHME says.

Attorney General nominee Merrick Garland's Senate confirmation hearing | USA TODAY
President Joe Biden's nominee to head the Justice Department, former U.S. Circuit Court Judge Merrick Garland, is scheduled to begin his confirmation hearings Monday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In his prepared opening statement, Garland vows to "protect the independence of the department from partisan influence" after four years in which critics assailed President Donald Trump for regularly venting his opinions on ongoing investigations, particularly ones involving himself and his allies.
Garland also pledges to prosecute the "white supremacists and others" who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 in what he calls "a heinous attack that sought to disrupt a cornerstone of our democracy." And, arguing "we do not yet have equal justice," Garland promises in his statement to continue the Civil Rights Division's mission to protect the rights of the "most vulnerable members of our society."
