Biden's Cabinet picks testify at Senate confirmation hearings
Five Senate committees held confirmation hearings for President-elect Joe Biden’s Cabinet picks Tuesday, a day before Mr. Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris were set to be sworn into office.
Mr. Biden's nominee for secretary of defense, retired General Lloyd Austin III, is testifying before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Meanwhile, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is holding a hearing to consider the nomination of Antony Blinken for secretary of state.
Earlier Tuesday, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee questioned Alejandro Mayorkas, the nominee for secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. If confirmed, Mayorkas, the son of Cuban immigrants, would take the helm of a highly politicized 240,000-person agency weeks after the deadly assault on the U.S. Capitol.
The Senate Intelligence Committee also held a hearing for Mr. Biden’s pick for director of national intelligence, Avril Haines, and the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing to consider Janet Yellen for Treasury secretary.
