India resorts to mass cremations as Covid deaths pile up in second wave
Mass cremations and funerals have become a grim common occurrence in India as the country's healthcare and post-mortem systems struggle to cope with a second wave of coroanvirus.
India reported the world's highest daily tally of coronavirus cases for the second day on Friday, surpassing 330,000 new cases, as it struggles with a health system in crisis and beset by accidents.
Deaths in the past 24 hours also jumped to a record 2,263, the health ministry said, while officials across northern and western India, including the capital, New Delhi, warned most hospitals were full and running out of oxygen.

Daunte Wright's mother: 'My son should be burying me'
Daunte Wright, the young black man shot by police during a traffic stop in suburban Minneapolis, was remembered Thursday at an emotional funeral just two days after a former police officer was convicted in the death of George Floyd, amid a national reckoning on racism and policing.
Hundreds of mourners wearing Covid-19 masks packed into Shiloh Temple International Ministries to remember Wright, a 20-year-old father of one who was shot by a police officer on April 11 in the small city of Brooklyn Center.
"The roles should be completely reversed. My son should be burying me," Daunte's mum, Katie Wright, said before burying her face in her hands.
Daunte's father, Arbuey, also briefly took the microphone. When he passed it back, Katie Wright recalled her son becoming a father to a boy born prematurely: "He was so happy and so proud, and he said he couldn't wait to make his son proud. Junior was the joy of his life. He lived for him every single day."

French fishermen block UK trucks in Brexit fishing protest
French trawlermen angered by the slow issuance of licenses to fish inside British waters after Brexit blocked lorries carrying UK-landed fish as they arrived in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Europe's largest seafood processing centre.
Britain's post-Brexit trade deal with the European Union allowed the bloc's fishermen to keep fishing deep into British waters, but only once they had received a license.
Those licenses were expected to be issued swiftly but instead some 80% of the French fleet in the northern Hauts-de-France region, from whose coastline Britain's southern shores are visible, were still waiting, French fishermen said.
Some 80 fishermen set off flares on the Boulogne docks, blocked two trucks with a barricade of wood pallets and barrels, and put up a sign that read: "You want to keep your waters??? OK ... So, keep your fish!!!".
Many of the skippers struggling to obtain a license were unable to meet the British demand for electronic data showing they had fished in UK waters during the five years running up to Britain's 2016 referendum on EU membership, Margolle said.

Watch again: Joe Biden hosts Leaders Summit on Climate on Earth Day | Climate change
Boris Johnson has said he is not a “bunny hugger” when it comes to tackling climate change, insisting that green policies will lead to economic growth.
Speaking at a virtual two day climate summit organised by US President Joe Biden, the prime minister said his message was “‘cake, have, eat”.
The prime minister’s emphasis on green jobs echoed opening remarks from Mr Biden, who used the summit to announce the US’s new goal of cutting 50 per cent of emissions by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. Mr Biden said this would be a “decisive decade” for tackling climate change.
The US is hoping to use the climate summit and its new targets as a moment to reassert its role as a global climate leader in the wake of the Trump administration.
Mr Biden’s speech was followed by remarks from Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose presence at the summit was seen as a positive step towards cooperation with the US on the environment.
The summit was the first in a series of meetings expected to focus on climate change this year, culminating in the COP26 UN climate summit, to be hosted by the UK in Glasgow and expected to take place in November.
Other world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron praised the US pledge, with Mrs Merkel saying she is "delighted the US is back to work with us in global politics", following the departure of climate change-sceptic former president Donald Trump.
Jair Bolsonaro said Brazil would be carbon neutral by 2050, a decade earlier than the previous target set just a few months ago, in December.
He also pledged to end Amazon deforestation by 2030, telling fellow leaders "you can count on Brazil".
Mr Bolsonaro has been widely criticised for an uptick in deforestation since he came to office two years ago, with forest fires reaching record levels in 2019.
Japan's prime minister Yoshihide Suga said its target would be a 46 per cent cut on 2013's levels, compared to an earlier 26 per cent goal, with efforts to push the reduction as high as 50 per cent.
China's President Xi Jinping announced no new targets but says the country's crackdown on coal would kick into gear in 2026-2030. The country previously pledged to reach peak emissions by 2030 and net zero by 2060.

US military aircraft damages major UK hospital’s helipad during training exercise
Critically ill patients cannot be airlifted directly to the East of England's major trauma centre after a US military aircraft damaged its helipad during a training exercise.
A video shows parts of the helipad at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge blowing up from the ground as a United States Air Force (USAF) CV22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft took off from it on Wednesday.
Up to 800 people receive major traumatic injuries each year in the East of England, such as in a car crash, and patients are currently being flown to Cambridge City Airport instead.
They have to complete the last part of their journey to the hospital by land ambulance with critical care staff on board.

Boris Johnson: Tackling climate emergency is not a 'politically correct act of bunny hugging'
Climate change policy is not an "expensive politically-correct green act of bunny-hugging", the Prime Minister has told a conference of world leaders.
In a speech at the US-convened virtual summit, Boris Johnson said that "growth and jobs" were a key part of cutting emissions and meeting climate goals.
It came after US President Joe Biden announced a new target to cut US greenhouse gas pollution by at least half by 2030, as he convened the summit of world leaders, the first in a series expected this year, culminating in COP26, due to be hosted by the UK in Glasgow in November.

Russia mobilises 10,000 soldiers and 40 warships in military drills amid tensions with Ukraine
The Russian military conducted massive drills in annexed Crimea involving dozens of navy ships, hundreds of warplanes and thousands of troops in a show of force amid tensions with Ukraine.
The maneuvers were described as the largest since Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and threw its weight behind separatist insurgents in eastern Ukraine.
The exercise comes amid increasing violations of a cease-fire in Ukraine's east and a massive Russian troops buildup on the border with Ukraine that raised Western concerns.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the Crimean maneuvers involve more than 60 ships, over 10,000 troops, around 200 aircraft and about 1,200 military vehicles.

India: 'My mother died in agony' from Covid after an oxygen tank leak at hospital
The daughter of a COVID patient who died due to an oxygen supply leak in western India on Wednesday says her mother "died in agony".
A local administrator in western India said 22 patients died in the Zakir Hussain Hospital hospital in Nashik when their oxygen supply was interrupted by a leakage in a supply tank.
The daughter, whose name was not given, said her mother had been at the hospital for five days and that she had "recovered" from the worst of her COVID illness when she died due to oxygen deprivation.
"There was no oxygen, she died in agony, she had trouble breathing, she died. Everyone there (in the ward) died," she said.

Russia: Thousands of Alexei Navalny supporters line streets to demand his freedom
Thousands of supporters of jailed opposition figure Alexei Navalny took to the streets across Russia on Wednesday evening in a final bid to secure his freedom amid reports that he was in a “critical” condition.
Hundreds of demonstrators packed the main thoroughfare across from the Kremlin, chanting “Navalny” and “We need changes!” just a few hundred meters from Russia’s seat of power.
Black-clad riot police put on a formidable show of force, with hundreds of officers in full gear lining the curb throughout the capital, but largely stood by and watched, a significant contrast to the violence of previous demonstrations.

Indian variant: How Covid is overwhelming India's hospitals and crematoriums | Dispatch from Mumbai
India is facing a huge health crisis as a new "mutant" variant of coronavirus has overwhelmed hospitals in the country's largest cities.
The Telegraph's India correspondent Joe Wallen reports from the ground in Mumbai, one of the country's worst affected cities, where hospital beds are at full capacity and patients are being turned away.
The daily tally of cases has accelerated terrifyingly in recent weeks, hitting a record 273,810 infections on Monday, up ten-fold in little over a month.
A new, more transmissible “double mutant” variant is feared to be behind the giddying surge in cases. India has little data on the new strain, but early analysis suggests its mutations make it both more transmissible and able to re-infect patients.
